Overclocking
new to overclocking, would like to OC my cpu past the overclock wizard or whatever that comes with amd hardware. using the OC wizard i bumped my cpu from 3.8 ghz to 4.3 ghz but I want to go further, but Im not sure where to start.

Cpu: FX 8370
Gpu: R9 390
Ram: 2x8gb hyperx fury
MOBO: MSI 970A-G46

Overclocking amd largely involves oc'ing the fsb, I have mine at 237 mhz but you probably won't get that from your mobo. I have my 8370 @ 4.75ghz but I have uber cooling and a 990fxa gaming mobo.

Here are some settings to try that don't involve fsb overclocking.

+0.16 cpu voltage (DO NOT USE if using factory or small cpu cooler), 4.6ghz cpu speed, you don't need to change nb voltage unless overclocking nb beyond 2.9ghz (which you need custom nb cooling to do), set cpu-nb voltage to +0.11 for 2.8-2.87ghz hyperthread.

Tinker with fsb speeds if you want better performance, go with 215-230 and test overclock with prime95, make sure it passes the first 2 hurdles (about 15 mins in) and you're good to go. More stress testing is recommended if using as a medical or other critical computing machine. You may need to reset your mobo if it doesn't accept the overclock (ie it won't boot).

This should help give you good overview of your Board and OC'ing such a CPU.

Overall, make small changes per boot / test. Do not make a lot of changes, as then if un-stable you have no idea where to start, resulting in your resetting bios back to defaults and starting over... small changes, then you pretty much know where the issue is when instability occurs.

Also my cool is the corsair h60 I think? And oobymach thanks for the suggestion, tweaking now

Yea H60 won't cut it for OC'ing an FX CPU; that much needs to be clear.

Best bet really is then just go with near stock, but turn off the crap:

- AMD Cool & Quiet = Disabled

- C1E = Disabled

- AMD Turbo = Enabled

- CPU VCore Voltage = Lower this until stable during heavy stress test, once you find the sweet spot here, use that voltage.

- Lock in your RAM via AMD AMP / XMP / D.O.C.P.

- Windows Power Options on High Performance

so its booted so far and idle temps are stable at roughly 43c as opposed to 40c before. im about to run a stress test and see how it does. if it doesn't do well ill consider A). investing in the intel e7s and supporting mob or B). better cooling though this one has served me great so far. used to be able to feel the near searing heat on the outside of the case with stock fan now barely gets warm. but again if hwmonitor tells me its hot then its hot.

If your cooling is good, it should idle at 20-30*C pretty much regardless of which CPU.

Again idle means nothing, but it should be near room temp; nothing in the 40s/50s ranges. Which is often a very bad sign the cooling just is not good enough, or you have very poor airflow in the case.

So far the tests have given me a few rounding errors early on which I assume is bad? Instability somewhere im sure. Suggestions on better cooling for this particular CPU? What should I look for?

Have you tried manually cranking up your Fans? You should be able to do so via the MSI Control Center software.

hmm i don't have msi control center, and msi.com doesn't have an entry for the g46, would the application for the g45 be compatible? and i was able to adjust one fan in bios but i should have 3 (4 fans split between 2 ports + cpu fan attached to radiator and coolant pump)
