Games automatically launching in 4k on 1080p monitor
I'm having a major issue with launching some games recently. I've noticed that when the game is launched the internal resolution is set to 4k in the game's options automatically, for new games and already installed games. I tried Google Searching to see if anybody else is having this issue, but all I can find is advertisements about how great 4k is, which I'm sure it is, but I have a 1080p monitor.
It was a minor annoyance at first mostly because it repositioned icons on my desktop and windows I had open before running the game, then I just changed the resolution back. But for some reason when I opened Resident Evil 7 today it decided it wanted to be in 4k as well and the game ran at like 4 FPS according to ShadowPlay until I changed the settings, and thanks to the animated main menu it took about 2 minutes to navigate just to the settings page.
I'd been playing RE7 in 1080p since launch until now, and suddenly the resolution changed, I have no idea why.
I have a GTX 980 Ti and the latest nVidia drivers. I have a feeling that the nVidia drivers are responsible somehow but I don't really know how to fix this issue, has anybody else had this issue too and can bring light to this situation? Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I had a look at that tab and its set to 1920 x 1080 (native). I haven't fiddled with any settings in the control panel since I've built this back like a couple years ago so all of the settings are still on default, it really baffles me that this just started suddenly happening out of nowhere. But I think one of the driver updates might be the culprit.
Go to nvidia control panel, look in the general 3D application settings and look for an option called "DSR factors". Uncheck any selected factors and your games should behave normally again.

The DSR feature adds downsampling resolutions to your system's resolution list. The highest default DSR factor just happens to come out as 4K. Games assume the highest available resolution is the system's native one, that's why they select it on first launch.

You either have dsr 4x enabled or custom resolutions, right click on desktop and go to nvidia control panel, if you click change resolution on the left it will show which is enabled (either custom or dsr).

Wow, thanks. That was set to 2x and 4x native resolution, and I hadn't noticed that feature before in the control panel, so it must be kinda recent. Thanks for that.

I'm going to necro the ♥♥♥♥ out of this to say THANK YOU... I kept having games default to 4k and it was pissing me off. This fixed it.

DSR was disabled on mine and I still have games trying to run at 4k...

Found this thread via google while hunting for ways to fix 3000th Duel Resolution which is stuck on 4096 x 2160 which is the highest possible setting in Nvidia. Nothing i have tried has given me more in game options.

i just checked the DSR thing and everything was already unchecked.
ive had a few games this year automatically set the resolution to an obscenely high setting making them unplayable, but most of those were fixable by going to bordered/borderless mode which than unlocked UN-psychotic resolutions.
im playing on a LG HD-TV that has a pseudo 4000k res which can be toggled but its basically just a gimmick like the old 3d glasses ready thing a decade ago.

Is there some way to block games from auto detecting high resolutions?

I too am having the same problem with games that start with full screen.. I checked my settings and the DSR - Factors are already 'Off' and nothing is ticked when i check the settings... Not to bring back a necro thread but Its still an issue for me.

What model/type of screen are you using?

same issue here. Games when i first launch them are always starting in 3840x2160 which really makes it hard for me to see as everythign is like uber miniscule.

I have to set the resolution to 1920x1080 each and every single time i first launch a game for the first time and then once set close and completly come out the game, rewboot my pc (since everything on my desktop and the show hidden icons has like enlarged 4x over) to fix any crap that happened and it is getting rather annoying.

I checked the DSR and there all OFF, my monitor is set to 1920x1080p but still launching a game for teh first time ♥♥♥♥♥ it all up. Once set it launches fine after that (unless there is a huge massive update to the game then have to set resolution up all over again) reboot and then launch and play

I am wondering if it could be the Geforce Experiance application causing any of this crap?

This is my first post on a Steam forum so let me know if I format this wrong or anything,

I checked my GeForce Experience app and hunted down the games I was having trouble with on my home page, turns out if you hover over your game, press details, and click on the wrench next to the revert button on your right you can set the preferred resolution for the game.

This is part of GeForce 'optimizing' your experience. Hope this helps!
