Default drivers are only there to get you started, they arent meant to be used on a regular basis.
They wont have full functionality like the actual drivers have.
Digital optical cable requires sound encoding to support surround (dolby digital or dts, etc).
Under Control Panel > Sound > Default Device > Configure
Setup 5.1 surround under that.
Enable audio upscaling on your sound card (if supported).
WIll try that now thanks;
As for sound card, I don't have one; the speakers seem to do the audio processing onboard, dolby digital; under default device the configure button is greyed out and unclickable
what motherboard do you have?
Audio: REALTEK HM_TUF V6.0.1.7848"
Just installed the latest realtek driver, gonna restart
Go through the Windows or Realtek control panel and set it up the way you want it, just be sure its set for 5.1 and go from there
Try using the Windows CP for Playback devices, select the speaker thats being used and hit Configure, see if you can do 5.1 from there
There is one new option under sample rate and bit depth "DTS Interactive (5.1 sound)" but the speakers I'm using don't support DTS
Right but u can't get full features from the OS generic audio driver; go to the Motherboard site and get the Audio Drivers and install; reboot when done, then fully configure everything via Windows Playback/Recording.
Realtek? Then u get that here; it covers every "Realtek HD Codec" for Laptops/Desktops.

Reaktek seems to be DTS whereas my speakers only support Dolby Digital, it';s all confusing
If using Optical, there is no config, just set Digital to Playback Default.
click 'playback devices'.
on 'playback' tab, set as 'default device' whatever device you want as default.
