How do I change my laptop's Display Adapter from Intel(R) HD Graphics to Nvidia GTx 1050
So, I just bought a brand new Gaming laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7000) And I have just figured out that it's display adapter is running on the Intel(R) HD Graphics. I know that the Nvidia GTx 1050 can easily do at least 120hz, but now i'm stuck with a 60hz adapter. I went to the Nvidia Control Panel and made my global setting High-Performance Nvidia processor. The games are working a fine, but it really bugs me knowing that they can do way better. Can someone help me change the adapter? I tried overclocking the Intel card, but it only shows 60hz and 48hz.

BTW, I googled it, searched all over the internet, but it's always the same answer:
Go to the Nvidia Control Panel and make your global setting High-Performance Nvidia processor.
Yes I did that. Please give me a REAL answer if you can.

EDIT: Thanks guys, you helped me realize that I am stupid :P Thanks for helping. I've pretty much got it now.

Does your monitor actually support 120Hz?

Are you using HDMI?

The internal Display will be 60Hz, nothing else.

^^This

Regardless of GPU Intel, Amd or Nvidia your display also needs to support higher refresh rates.

Rightclick desktop > Display settings > Display adapter properties > Monitor > Monitor settings. This will list all available refresh rates. I suspect 60hz is the max you will get on your laptop screen. Connecting your laptop to an external monitor that supports higher rates may work depending on the lead quality and connection type, provided of course that your laptops port supports greater than 60hz.

Even at 60hz you can still get more than 60fps if you don't use v-sync/cap your fps. I'd try using nvidias control panel to set v-sync to fast and leave v-sync disabled in game (otherwise it won't work) when running fps higher than your 60hz display.

Unless u have some much newer/better Laptop (such as ASUS, MSI, Razer) that have 120Hz+ or "GSync" available in the on-board screen, the screen will be 60Hz and that is all it ever will be.

Now external screens, yes you can go higher. But on most laptops, usually only the Primary Onboard GPU (Intel) would drive those external displays.

For $1399, that is a RIP from DELL I must say.

ASUS, MSI and SAGER all have better systems for around the same or less.

In Win7/8/10 ~ don't make Res/Refresh changes via the OS Desktop Settings (Screen Resolution); do it from the GPU Driver Software directly. Now some Laptop Drivers might not have that, so it depends.

And whenever you get a Laptop, first thing to do is remove all their Drivers and get the latest ones.

One issue with all those Dell (non Alienware) is poor cooling.

Yeah, it's not a very big problem for me right now. It was worth the money though.

Wasn't exactly a "deal" just that Dell is getting rid of old stuff.
Plenty of decent Laptops going for around the $800-1000 range with i7 + 1050 / 1050 Ti / 1060

I guess that is right, Should I consider getting a 144hz monitor?
