Is the i7-2600K good enough for a GTX 1080?
So i'm considering buying a gtx 1080 as my 970 is showing it's age

but i'm worried that my 2600k will bottleneck

(Note: it is overclocked to 4.1GHz)

While it's not the best CPU, it too is showing its age, it not going to bottle-neck a single 1070 or 1080. I would just hope you have 12-16 GB of RAM though.

Maybe install better cooling overall and OC it further; you're not even tapping into it yet @ 4.1Ghz

I swapped a 970 in my i7-2600 for a factory overclocked 1080ti. It ran smoothly even on games like Witcher 3 at 4K DSR.

The 2600 is set to run up to 4.3 GHz if needed using the ASUS performance tweaker. However it soon warms up to 100C if it does.

One of the guys in my local pc store says he has run a 2600K at 5GHz with water cooling. I don't know how stable it was though.

To be honest I really didn't get much out the upgrade except for being able to play Skyrim/Enderal and upcoming Skyrim 32-bit games with full graphic mods and ENB.

I used to benchmark my 2600K at 5.1 / 5.2ghz with a custom loop and it would just about hit 80c. 4.8ghz was my daily speed.

80*C is fine for those, not hot.

In most games u will be totally fine man. Oc it to 4,5 or more with good cooling.

Yes, whatever clock you can achieve that is stable, doesn't go too overboard with increased temps, and doesn't require much if any voltage increase, the better.

You've got the K ver so use it, intel hasn't really been motivated to push out huge improvements over the last years.

Those videos above aren't that informative. The first shows performance being limited by the rx480. Even a g4560 is going to get similar fps scores with an rx480. So as a cpu test it fails.

The second doesn't show any loads so again the fact that the gpu is limiting the results isn't revealed (probaby due to the low witcher fps).

The fact that you bring the G4560 into it tells you may not be well informed.

and as far as GTA 5 goes the g4560 take a tremendous hit in min fps dropping more than 1/2 with a lowly R9 380 compared to i5.

G4560 and cpu heavy games just don't mix.

TBH one ^ of the few games where a GTX1080 is useful.

If you want to add more games to the list where a GTX1080 would serve useful at 1080p feel free but realistically a person with GTX1080/1080ti would be playing at 1440p concentrating more on the gpu.
