and if you use cheap cable you can fire both connected devices
Since low powered device like SATA SSD could be powered simply by a SATA to USB cable alone.
Have you gone back to other systems and tried the drive again to ensure it is still working?
Most likely the drive is there, just hidden. All removable drives get hidden by default.
It's one of the first things you disable in folder options when installing WinOS.
Chance are the USB 3.x Drivers were never installed.
USB 1.1/2.0 is plug & play via generic driver; 3.x is not
Then reboot and try connecting the Driver again.

*Before install of this, disconnect any devices from all USB 3.x ports (Keyboard, Mouse, Controller, connect to 2.0 ports; non Blue/Red). After update, power off the PC, disconnect power cable, then hold PC Case Power Button in for 10 secs to ensure power is flushed, then power the PC back on normally.

Might help to update Motherboard BIOS as well; alot of issues addressed on that board since 2015.
