External SSD gets power, but not recognized by windows 10
I have a 1TB external SSD that I can confirm works, as it works on my laptop, but when I plug it into my PC it doesn't even show up, either in bios, or in disk management. I'm lost, all the things I know to do don't seem to apply here. The ports work, and can do other thigns, just for some reason not this hard drive. It is a USB 3.0 drive, the USB ports I use on the PC are USB 3, or 3.1, any ideas?

Look in Disk Management

USB3.0 and 3.1 have few sub-formats (half of them incompatible between themselves)
and if you use cheap cable you can fire both connected devices

There isn't anything in disk management.

What type of cable?

Since low powered device like SATA SSD could be powered simply by a SATA to USB cable alone.

No idea, it's whatever USB cable it came with, is there a way to find out?

It came already inside an external enclosure? Can you link to it?

Have you gone back to other systems and tried the drive again to ensure it is still working?

Oh, I thought you were asking something else, it works fine, it will run on my laptop, just not on my PC. Both are Windows 10

You tried other ports? It should read the drive even on a USB 2.0 port.

Most likely the drive is there, just hidden. All removable drives get hidden by default.
It's one of the first things you disable in folder options when installing WinOS.

Maybe, I've never had removable drives on my PC, so I've never dealt with it, so I'll try that, then the USB 2 port just to see.

Anyways; try a USB port on the rear of the Motherboard; not the Front of Case.

If you're curious here's the error it gives in device manager: Unkown USB Device (Link in Compliance Mode)

What Motherboard do you have in the Desktop?
Chance are the USB 3.x Drivers were never installed.
USB 1.1/2.0 is plug & play via generic driver; 3.x is not

Download and install the USB 3.x Firmware and Drivers
Then reboot and try connecting the Driver again.

*Before install of this, disconnect any devices from all USB 3.x ports (Keyboard, Mouse, Controller, connect to 2.0 ports; non Blue/Red). After update, power off the PC, disconnect power cable, then hold PC Case Power Button in for 10 secs to ensure power is flushed, then power the PC back on normally.

Might help to update Motherboard BIOS as well; alot of issues addressed on that board since 2015.

I can confirm it works on one of my USB 2 ports, but not on any of my USB 3 ports.
