Hi! people I need help {Thermal Throttling} FPS drops
SPECS:
MSI GE70 20E
CPU: i7 Processor
OS: Windows 8.0 64 Bits
Memory: DDR3L 12GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M
Graphics VRAM: 2GB GDDR5
WD HDD
mSATA SSD

I have 3 years with my laptop and it's been working great with no issues until now, I have an issue when playing any game now.

I select the Hi performance profile under battery settings and every time the GPU starts rendering every 3 seconds or sometimes randomly the FPS and voltages drops (CPU from 1.0100 V to 0.8490 V and GPU from 1.0000 V to 0.831 V ), the CPU and the GPU underclocks and the thermal throttling starts, I monitor with Intel tuning utility , GPUZ and CPUID.

I started a game in windowed mode and notice that when recreating the problem the AC Adapter Icon with in windows (right bottom corner) starts to blink (ever time that the icon blinks the voltages go down and the CPU clock go down and the GPU clock go down)
I used to play games like GTA V, BTF 4, MOHW etc, at minimum Hi settings and 60 FPS 1080 p.

Notes:
- Every time the FPS drops, goes to 8 FPS then go to normal 60 fps then again to 8 fps like a cycle.
- My battery has 47% wear level.
- Under balanced power plan I can do the Valley benchmark .
- @ 2.09 GZ ~ or below the CPU and GPU work together and ad almost no instability.
- Temps CPU 65 C max GPU 54 C max.
- last 3 years on summer when having local temps of 29 C the CPU max temp was 89 C and the GPU temp was 79 C. (almost all the time are those temps when playing hi demanding games since last 3 years.)
- I did a 5 minute CPU stress test on hi performance profile and runs @ 3.20 Ghz and after 2 mintes the AC icon starts blinking.
- Replaced thermal paste (first time this year, total life time 3 changes)
- I alread have 10h + searching on forums.

So right now I have 3 hypothesis:
1. the AC adapter is not giving enough power to support CPU and GPU at the same time.
2. The battery is not helping to provide enough power.
3. some motherboard component could be damaged including Video card.

My options are: buy a new AC, battery, send laptop to repair or buy a new one.

Need help, can't play any game and I'm dying :steamsad:
Once solved i will update this tread
Any comments , Ideas , experiences will be appreciated, Thanks.

First off, update to Win 8.1 or 10

Battery doesn't give full power anyways. Yea with that much wear & tear, if u use Battery, replace it.

Not above 90*C so I dont see the issue.
Just sounds like your Battery & AC Adapter need replacing. That is to be expected after a couple years on a Laptop you use for highly demanding apps and/or games.

Might be good idea to replace Fan(s) and thermal paste too.

You can get all this on Ebay, just search the laptop model + item on a place like Ebay.
To be sure of those items; look on your Battery and AC Adapter, they have model# on them.

Thanks for the response, i forgot to mention the thermal paste was the first thing i replaced, iddle or browsing, temps CPU 45C GPU 35 C, and yes i alread have the charger and the battery (generic) on my shoping cart on Amazon.

idle doesn't matter; load does.

Run AIDA64 for about an hour and see how it does.

Elevate the laptop

it should never be sitting on a flat surface when you're going to be running something highly demanding; otherwise they generally will have poor airflow and build up heat faster, or retain it due to lack of airflow.

I have the AIDA64 Engineer trial version and run a GPGPU benchmark and is a disaster LOL starts blinking the AC icon and thermal throtling kiks in, no hi temps, trial versin does not give to much info, i will waith until nexk weeks to arrive new AC and battery, its only 45 USD both

Battery is not a "need" to address this in the short term.
Most Laptops should work even with Battery removed.

Even with new thermal paste; after 1-2 years, the fans usually need replacing.

I mentioned battery because since day one if the battery gets to 90 % charge underclocks the CPU by itself. and at 95 > and connected to AC was working @ 100 % performance. on ater removed the CPU wont go more than 2.30GHz. and i have a big cooler master fan and removed the back of laptop for better ventilation.

You can maybe avoid the higher temps/throttle for now.

Try editing your power options profile in Control Panel.
Set Max CPU for both Battery and AC-Power to 90%
Then re-run a CPU stress test.

I did a GPU stress test and set power plan to power saving 90% max CPU and also geting like 78% thermal throtling and the power AC icon blinks, no hi temps detected on CPU or GPU max tems 51 C, I notice that my GPU clock on idle is on 135MHz thats not normal, before alwas was on idle @ 765Mhz (on test was going from 135 MHz to 400 to 536 then 765 then 985 then drops sudenly to 135 like a cycle)

I don't understand, are the CPU clocks dropping when under full loads? If not then its fine.
Your CPU/GPU shouldn't "thermal throttle" unless the temps are hitting around 90-95*C+ areas.

Ensure you set NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Default GPU to "High Performance NVIDIA"

Get a cooling pad.

Get a cooling pad.

Doesn't really help much at all. You could blow a full size room/box fan at your Laptop; it doesn't help if the internal cooling is an issue, like the fan inside is worn out.

It should be normal. If its not doing anything, hence idle, it has no need to run faster. I can't explain the cycle you describe but a low clock speed on idle is correct. Having a high clock speed when idle would be a cause for concern.

My 1070 is connected to 1080p and 1440p displays. it both are at 120hz or lower my GPU idles at 215 Mhz. If I set either to 144hz, leaving the other inbetween on or between 60 or 120hz it idles at 1000mhz and rises to a max of 1582mhz while gaming.

Before anyone says anything yes >4x clock speed for 24 hz seems rather high but I didn't make the drivers. Regardless the point remains. Idle speeds should be low and only rise while doing stuff. If it used to idle @ 765 Mhz then it was either doing something you didn't notice, dodgy drivers/setup not letting it downclock or its been faulty for awhile.

EDIT: Forgot to say.

Run a temp monitoring software while watching your cpu usage % (HWmonitor does both) and run Prime95 for 15 - 20mins. It'll stress your CPU and you can watch the temps rise while seeing if you cpu is being used to max ability.

Find a GPU stress/benchmark and repeat for GPU.

How hot do the GPU and CPU Temps get? Do the Gpu and CPU reach and maintain max clock speed? If they stay below max speed/usage % what are the temps?

If you are ALT+Tabbing out of a full-screen game to view CPU/GPU clocks and such; those will drop because the game is not the most-active app/screen at this moment.

Run your games/benchmarks in Windowed Mode so you can see your Monitoring app at the same time.

Or use something like MSI Afterburner + RiveTuner and enable all the OSD features so you can see all that info in-game when game is Full-Screen. You can setup Hotkeys to toggle the OSD on/off as needed.

Thanks fot the response, i alread do almost all test with Intel utility, prime,aida64, GPUZ almost ever tool, i alread post on my coments the results, i will upload a short video clip, also the teps are relatevely low. in 2 weeks i will purchase the AC adapter and batery
