Also, you should be able to use your Win7 key to activate Win10
I did this 2 months ago with my sons PC from Win7 and it worked, so it should still work.
And yes, this is on purpose
Microsoft did this so people could still get the upgrade for free
So assuming they are still allowing it, you can get Win10 for free
You just need a 4GB USB drive to install it onto with the media creation tool and your Win7 key which can be obatined by the program SPECCY
Huh why do I need a USB drive when I can just download it the win 10 installer form the microsoft website ?

Windows 10, Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 S are the flavours it comes in.
Pro offers a few advantage over vanilla Win 10 by letting you defer updates. The S version only allows you to run applications downloaded from the Windows store.

In that case, I guess the Home "flavor" should do it.
