While the Infernal Dimensions (other than your Headquarters) would be a series of Tactics battles to complete.
Infernal Dimensions are rather static, while the Mortal realms are very dynamic (Mortal armies will try to destroy your presence in their realm if they catch wind of who you are ... shapeshifting abilities researchable in the HQ to masquerade as a human, and/or raising an unholy army, are top priorities ;) )
While the Infernal Dimensions are static, there will never be a harder boss than the secret bosses in the deepest depths of Tartarus (hidden maps that you have to unlock by finding sets of Demonic artifacts in the mortal realm, usually guarded by an order of Knights or Monks)
If you let the mortal realms grow too strong, or just ignore them (don't cause any mischief) they may lead a crusade through a portal into your HQ realm. In that case, building defenses in the HQ may be prudent.
---> The HQ is interactable on an FPS basis like Morrowind or Skyrim, except that you can make changes to it on the Macro level as well. (changes will take place during your next trip to the mortal realm or your next battle into the Infernal realms).
You can add to the realm in a flexibility somewhere between X-com and Dwarf Fortress. Its a 3-dimensional area, yet the rooms added will largely be squares (well, I guess you could design within the square to make it more like a maze or what-not).
Not sure how exactly the pocket dimenion should play out ... but perhaps like a large dungeon map on Skyrim? Except you get to determine the contents of the dungeon >:)
I suppose you could have an open-air pocket dimension as well, where instead you build castles which have a set number of rooms in them, and the number of castles you can have depends on the number of Infernal dimensions you have conquered.
other non-mortal units auto-rez within 7 - 14 days, depending on their strength. During your 'death' no new contructions or researches can be qued, but existing ones will continue until completion. Your current minions will do their best to 'guard' your lands as best an AI can, however they will not conduct offensive missions until you are again alive to lead them. (Meanwhile the Mortal realm keeps getting closer to invading your HQ, and/or reclaim the Mortal lands you have conquered)
MORTAL followers, meanwhile, have a number of uses. If a mortal follower dies, their soul will go into your Ally soul vault as a stored value, thereby keeping its stats (rather than a nameless soul in your regular soul vault. Still, nameless souls still have a value of how strong they are). You can do a number of things with ally souls. You can ressurect them with gold, you can turn them into a Wraithform with mana, or you can send their soul to the Soul vault, where they will become another nameless soul from which you can make new equipment or new demon soldiers. You can always keep them in your ally vault until you have enough gold to rez them ... but perhaps you have a limited number of slots in your ally vault, hmm.
Anyways, if either Soul Vault them or Wraith them, their old body will be available as raw materials. Raw Materials (aka human bodies, metal, etc) can be used to create new soldiers, but you need a source of energy to power it.
If you use mana/magic to power it, it becomes an automoton. Automotons are basically useless in combat (consider slow zombie in a slow zombie hoard) however they make decent worker-bees for your HQ.
You can also use a soul to power it instead. The strength of the soul determines boosts to starting stats, as well as how fast it can gain Experience. Certain templates have a natural penalty to EXP gain (aka a DRAGON would have perhaps a -80% experience penalty, so a +80% legendary soul may help in that regard), so advanced souls would be more useful for animating advanced templates. Advanced templates also cost more materials to create (aka many human bodies, deadly animal parts (aka Snake fangs, Chimera Claws or Wolf Claws or Griffon Claws, and Griffon Eyes), precious gems, and mana to create a Dragon)
In addition to an inter-dimensional crusade ... (wher massive army of mortals invades your HQ over the course of several months, wherein you would have to kill them off, poison them, or break their morale ... several months meaning every day for the next several months a new platoon (or party) of mortals will arrive within your pocket dimension. The larger your dimension, the larger the invading mortal army gets to be. If its a small one, it will just be bands of adventurers, but if its a large one, could be a Total War style army up your arse.
In addition to this, you will get the occasional adventurer wandering in. (sort of like Dungeon Keeper, I guess). The level of the invading adventurer will typically depend on your Reputation (something from elder scrolls, PayDay the Heist, etc). Your reputation will rise and fall depending on your status as leader/invader/secret agent of soul collecting on the mortal realm, as well as the number of Infernal Provinces you have captured.
Your starting techs would be basic energies (starter magics), Graveyards (able to craft basic undead minions), Basic Negotiations (can recruit (lawful?chaotic?) evil level 1 mortals), and basic cloaking (for 1 hour each 'day', can walk the mortal realm appearing ... somewhat mortal .. but still having a chaotic/evil aura exuding from your presence)
