Media player integrated into steam overlay
It would eliminate having to alt+tab all the time for switching and playing songs

Nah, seriously just make a long playlist. Fill it with songs you're not going to want to change after hearing the first minute.

But what if you have to pause it because you need to talk to someone or if you want to turn the music volume down but not the game volume. Or, you might be thinking "this song would be really awesome right now" and you could play that song. Some games don't even allow you to alt+tab (ie. Amnesia: The Dark Descent), and I'm not saying I would listen to music while playing Amnesia but I'm just saying it would be a cool feature that would give customers another reason to use steam.

A good work around would be to display the game at native resolution, but put it into window mode. Provided it doesn't have a border, it overlaps the entire screen including the task bar. This should make alt-tabbing much less annoying since it doesn't have to exit full screen to switch tasks. It works great with Source games from what I've tried.

Ya, I think all games should be like that.

Or you could just make a playlist of all your music on YouTube.

Once again, you would still have to alt+tab to control the music at all. It doesn't matter if you're listening to it on Youtube or a media player, you still have the same problems.

if it were like on the xbox 360 it'd be great. but something lightweight like vlc.
Snubber 27 września 2012 o 14:14
I have never seen the player on the xbox 360 but ya, I agee, if it were like vlc that would be perfect. Especially if i had the the same file reading capabilities as vlc.

Or simply use a media player that supports custom global hotkeys (such as foobar2000), make a long enough playlist, and adjust sound levels/which song is playing using the hotkeys. There's no reason for Steam to act like a media player. It's already a web browser, an instant messaging client, a voice chat client, and a game library manager/downloader. It really doesn't need to do more.

I believe the exact opposite! I think that the more uses versatililty it gets, the more customers it will attract. Let's say a gamer that isn't really a fan of steam and could care less what his game provider was, whether it was retail, steam, amazon, game fly, etc. And he has the option to buy a game for the same price on steam or at a store. But, because steam has all these cool features, he would want to buy the game on steam instead.

Software bloat by feature creep? Sounds like a great idea! It's worked out well for iTunes and Windows Vista, right?

Right?
Snubber 29 września 2012 o 19:13
Isn't that what settings are for? They would obviously have the option to be enabled and disabled.

Would be awesome! some addon for WMP or Jet Audio also for iTunes
