Fixed width of Steam is too small on Steam Community, Discussions, Game Hub, News, etc.
Like my original thread here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2926194

variable width by user variable or min/max-width CSS needs to happen before I will use this format. This text areas are so small (~740px/570PX) I have empty space on my phone when viewing it. Min/Max-width CSS yields a more versatile look for the device formats that web users have and use.

min-width (CSS)

min-width: <length> | <percentage> | -moz-max-content | -moz-min-content | -moz-fit-content | -moz-available The min-width CSS property is used to set the minimum width of a given element. It prevents the used value of the width property from becoming smaller than the value specified for min-width.

max-width (CSS)

max-width: <length> | <percentage> | none | -moz-max-content | -moz-min-content | -moz-fit-content | -moz-available The max-width CSS property is used to set the maximum width of a given element. It prevents the used value of the width property from becoming larger than the value specified for max-width.

Valve, please set MinWidth to ~700px/570px and Maxwidth to 1024px or 1280px. Or provide an option to set our own Fixed width.

Thanks for the support!

Agreed. Once your within a thread, the actual discussion/reading area is about ~550 pixels. That skews well over to the ridiculous side.

If it weren't for the sidebar, the threads would be as wide as the vbulletin forums. I think some of the stuff in the sidebar could be moved (perhaps to the top of the page) while others probably aren't strictly necessary (like the forum selection).

Actually, I think a good middle ground would be to make the sidebar collapsible.

Here's what it looks like when I remove the sidebar from the page and stretch the rest of the page to fit:

I actually kind of think that's a little too wide.

I already suggested it long time ago http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/7/882959061474865969/ and valve didn't reply.
If they really read the forums like they say I don't think it takes too much time to post either:
-We're working on it.
-We're not working on it but we will.
-We will never make it.

As have I, and probably a few others. But all we can do is keep mentioning it, and if enough people complain then they might consider it a an issue worth solving.

I've actually just finished writing a Chrome extension to remove the sidebar and shift stuff around. Still a few minor tweaks to be made, but at the moment it's working great.

Coll, I was going to make one too, but now I think it's not needed. When will you release yours?

I hadn't even thought about it, to be honest. If you guys are actually interested in using it, I'll throw it up on the Chrome Web Store (for free, of course). You should know that at the moment, it only works on the main discussion area and not on discussions in groups or game hubs (I'll probably fix that in a future version though).

Yeah, of course I would use it, that's why I was making one for myself xD.
Would be cool to see it in the Chrome Store, but I hope you know that they change money for publishing there (in case you didn't know).

What about a Firefox extension?
It's not like everyone is using Chrome.

Who is that "Firefox" you're talking about?
No, seriously, Firefox and Chrome extensions are very similar. After doing one, making the other should be easy.
