Reputation system on forums needed
Have you noticed how more mature and helpful are posters on old Steam forums(which are still running) compared to the new one? That is because there was a reputation system, it encouroged people to write helpful replies and guides, because you know, everyone likes to be popular!

There shouldn't be dislike/downvote button of course, because people will abuse it to hell. But as for likes/upvotes, of course there will some people trying to cheat the system and guess what, most of them are spotted. I don't see the issue here, because the benefits of such system will outweight the potential problems in the long run.

All jump on karma train!

I liked SPUF better for other reasons, but I don't think a rep system would necessarily "fix" what's wrong with this one. The two forums are two different animals.

Yes, let's add another feature to stroke user's electronic egos, allowing them to develop narcissistic personalities.

Edit: Man, that really came off sounding bitter :P

Bitter maybe, but accurate sadly. Some (not all) people do take such things as a sign that they're above others somehow.

You are stereotyping. Also Steam Level is for electronic ego, reputation is different thing. If you come off as arrogant no one will upvote you. What's the problem really? No one is forcing you to use it.

I have noticed that almost every suggestion on these forums gets a bunch of naysayers. I just hope Valve has something in the works to make forums a better place - moderation isn't enough.

With reputation on the old forum I saw some people use it as a way to measure how "Important" they where compared to those who had none.

This community has far more people who I think would use that claim a lot more.

I'm fine if they decide to add in a post count but reputation is something we don't need. It broke within a week or two on the old forums and since then it was pretty useless.

All I hear is what happened on old forums. I am not saying it should be exactly the same like on old forums! There should be restrictions, for example one vote a day and only people who bought a game on Steam could vote.

So some people used their reputation points in arguments. Why is that a bad thing? Yes, they feel important because they are popular. Just like the popular kids in the school, popular colleagues at workplace, popular friends in the drinking party. There are always people who are more popular than the others, it's the simple fact of life. No need to be bitter about it.

Forums are boring with everyone equal.

There were restrictions on SPUF too.

Thanks for pointing yourself why a rep system would be born broken here.

The older forums are harder to find, they require registration - it's not just an easy one stop process that allows everyone and everyone to post there. THAT is probably the reason you find it a bit more mature than the built in Discussions area. You can't just click and post with your "thiss gammezzzz suxxxx" you have to think a little bit before you can do it.

As for rep... it doesn't work well on there. New people join, who are helped by people. Because these users are new, they don't know about the rep system and until they make a number of posts they can't hand out rep anyway, so the helpful person doesn't get anything. Rep is mostly given out for humorous remarks (valve time video, taking the mickey out of a user for not knowing something) or agreeing with someone during an 'argument'.

The forums aren't meant to be, and don't NEED to be, a "popularity contest". That doesn't foster good discussions. We don't need 100 little Justin Beibers running around flaunting how much e-rep they have because they make more smileys or post more ponies than the next guy. All that does is split people into cliques and make them look down on the others. NO society needs that. Not even a virtual one. Plus it's been pointed out how easy it is to cheat and gain rep by making new accounts and farming it and other schemes. Zefar is right, it's not something we need and the forum would be worse if it were implemented.

The rep system was lame.
It was pretty much post funny or nostalgic youtube video and people would +rep him like mad.
But if you actually helped someone with a problem you could get 1 +rep if you where lucky.

So now I will call you a scrub and your points are invalid because you are only steam level 1. Thats how the old rep system worked also.

It's the irony of the Rep system in SPUF.
To avoid abuse new users don't get to give rep until after having made a number of posts.
Most of users in need of help are usually new users, unable to rep.
So, you have a system, unable to work as it should for itself.

But make a joke, or a witty remark, and the rep falls from heaven...
