Stop the corporate greed please!
I am quite frustrated with the new generation of games that are coming out, where we are charged full price for the game, then they want us to pay for 'in-game purchases' in order to have the full experience.

In the old days, one only had to pay for the new expansions of games as they came out, which was acceptable. These days, companies are charging for things like extra factions, extra cosmetics, or anything that they can think of. Some games are now almost 'pay to win'.

I was very disappointed with Shogun2, where you pay >$80 for the original game, then have to buy extra clan packs etc, as well as the extra expansions. It is almost worth waiting for a year after the original game has come out, then just buy the 'whole pack' for a discounted price.

The only games that should be charging for 'in-game purchases', are those that are free to begin with. This trading card thing is a bit of a joke too. Honestly it seems to me, that there is a board room full of fresh university marketing students thinking of stupid ways to make extra money - the end result of all of these changes, is a poorer user experience for us gamers.

I won't be following this discussion, I just wanted to submit my feedback.

You don't have to buy extra clan packs. I promise the world won't implode if you stay on the base game.

It's a market, and markets sort themselves out. If it's a viable business to sell bits of game for bits of money, people will do that, and they should be allowed to. If you're not interested, don't buy it, they're not doing you any harm. If not enough people are interested, it won't work and they'll have to stop doing it. But if it's working out - if people are willing to pay for it - you have no more right to interfere in those people's choice than you do to tell them not to buy a particular kind of shampoo you don't like.

Half the problem is people's expectation that they somehow deserve or need "the full experience". They don't deserve it, and they don't need it. Treat every purchase as a separate unit, because it is. Weigh up each purchase: "is this - in itself - worth the asking price?" If it is, then what on earth difference does it make if there's also expensive DLC on sale? Concentrate on the transaction you are taking part in, not the one you aren't. And if it isn't worth the asking price, then how is that different to any other high-priced product in the world? Like I said, the market will sort it out.

Yeah good point - the market will sort itself out. Game producers/publishers will have to stop doing this if the feedback from the gaming community is negative.

I am just glad I didn't race out and buy Company of Hereos 2, as I see they are now selling extra parts separately. I see Borderlands 2 is now selling extra playable characters seperately. Rome 2 will be hard for me to avoid, as the original RomeTW was one of my all time favourites.

In future, I might start boycotting games that are not 'complete out of the box' out of principle.

You'll be boycotting almost every game then.

Yes it does suck, pay full price for a game only find out you have to pay more to enjoy the perks of the full experience. These days Im encouraged to be more of a conscientious buyer, only buying games that I can enjoy the most for my money. I've been bitten by certain games, its quite unfortunate how companies can manipulate people into buying their product.

But I just don't buy half as many games as I used to and do more research on the games I'm interested in the most. Luckily there's Steam that can accommodate anyone's budget and still have a good time playing games. :csgoglobe:

Don't buy full-priced games. Wait for the next summer/christmas/halloween/whatever sale and get the game for 75% off.
No reason to boycott either. Just buy the complete package when it's out and discounted. That's what I do.

Or wait for the GOTY version with all the DLC already bundled.
Patience usually pays off well on Steam.
People like us, who wait a year or more are not doing the developers any good because they need our money THAT year for the tax / wages etc...So because of their cheekiness, I enjoy the fact that I'm getting a discount out of them.

I bought The Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim a year and a bit after it was released, and some of the DLC was gifted to me. Even then, I should have waited for this year's christmas sales before buying it....

TWO years is really needed to get your money's worth on a full complete bundle (goty)

That was exactly my point. That's what I do as soon as any DLC is announced.

I never did understand people who think that a one time fee should get you the whole experience (DLCs). View the purchase like you do with a car. You get the basics, but then you do have to pay for the extra luxury.

In the old days, you paid $4.99 for a cartrage. Now you pay $49.99 for something with no physical evidence.

Everyone sees things in from a different angle. I see things such as cartridge as more clutter that will eventually end up in the trash or in a garage sale. Used items have no significant resale value so I don't care about the actual CD, or boxes. Helps keep my house clutter free. Just give me the content and I will be content.

And no, cartidges were not $4.99 new. Games like Zelda for the Nintendo 8 Bit went for around $80 USD or more.

In fact, games used to be way more expensive than nowadays in that old days.

I ran into a comment of his earlier that He said that he is "only 13." So I'm amazed he even used the word "cartridge" and "in the old days." Game cartridges were way long obsolete before he even was truly conscious that he existed. I just looked it up that the Nintendo 64 was the last cartridge based system which was discontinuted in 2003 in the U.S.

Makes sense why he thinks that those things were 5$ then.

Welcome to the real world where companies main goal is to make money, also I have no problem supporting good developers by buying their DLC. Sure there are plenty of garbage overpriced DLC but there are also plenty of DLC's that are amazing to.
