Music In-Game Overlay
Valve should include the option to be able to play music from your computer via the overlay. It could sink with your music folder and then you would be able to play your musci while playing a game. now I know games already have soundtracks but sometimes I want to listen to Vivaldi's four seasons while blowing somebodies head off with a rocket launcher.

Also this should automatically mute the game.

I guess you could always get GTA3, theres an MP3 file you can import all your music to, then listen to Vivaldi's oboe concerto #2 as you do a drive-by on some old Todger? . .

Try using the search engine. This has been mentioned waaaaaay too many times.

Yes, but if it was integrated into the overlay, you wouldn't have quit the game if you wanted to change a playlist or pause the music because a cut scene was happening.
plus running multiple programs can just cause crashing too much...
way back when men screamed at each other in single syllable sounds and beat each other with sticks? And the machines just used to keep coming out with the number fourty two?

Alt + Tab to change playlist, it will allow you to exit the game without closing the application. Best used for single player games and moments that you can stop in game.
Even this isn't foolproof because some games just don't respond well to being alt+tabbed. Of course, I have a keyboard with media controls on it so I usually don't even have to alt+tab to perform basic functions if I have music playing in the background.
heh heh heh

Steam would have to override the complete audio system of the running game which would only be possible if the game was programmed to support this.
And then there is the license issue with mp3, meaning Valve would have to pay Thompson (?) to be able to run mp3 files within the Steam client.

Actually integrating that into games sounds like a great idea, and for older gaems they can just mute the application alltogether

As for the licensing I never thought about that, do you need to pay royalties on file formats?

Use a player with global hotkeys or a plugin that adds it. I can control both Winamp and iTunes pretty well while playing games. Not perfectly, so this isn't at all an argument against the suggestion, but play/pause/stop/prev/next/volume is all I need mostly anyway, so for people only concerned that they have no control at all, it's a good thing to keep in mind.
