Skype & IM while in-game
I am definitely a gamer. When I play games they have to be on fullscreen. But I'm always talking to friends via Skype and other messengers. Its always a bit of a hassle to have to pause my game and switch out of it every couple minutes to talk to someone. I'm wondering if it would be at all possible to integrate IM programs with the steam in-game menu. Because sometimes games crash when you switch out of them. Just being able to hit shift-tab and bring it up would make it all so much easier. I just play the games, i have no clue when it comes to things like coding and writing programs, so i have no idea how easy/difficult this could be. But it would be so happy if someone would put this in the next steam update.

I'm not exactly sure that Steam has to do something to make it integrated with Skype.
It's more the other way around.
Skype has to do something to work with Steam, and it doesn't look like they're willing to do anything to make Skype compatible with Steam.
So, you're out of luck there
Companies like Skype and Microsoft are way too busy doing all the crap that they do to worry about ever doing something like this. So I really hope that Steam is the one who can do this because f they cant then it'll never happen

Like I said, Steam can not do anything about it.
It's up to Skype.

Another application that is compatible with Steam is Raptr, and their UI works while in-game with Steam, or with any non-Steam game.
It's only up to Microsoft to make Skype compatible with Steam and all games. Not Steam, and not Valve.
It should really be the reverse. Steam should smoehow create an open standard API that allows other chat clients to work with it. Right now the closed nature of it is somewhat frustrating.

The thing is other chat clients CAN work with it.
Like i said, Raptr is a good example of a client compatible while running Steam and non-Steam games.
It is not so closed as to what you might think.
You can just have a secondary device (e.g a mobile device) with your IM/Skype app near you tbh
ok heres a few things cause i have this problem as well
you can either go into the game settigings and change it to windowed not full screen
or you can use steam chat cause that works with shift + tab
if your on windows you can pause the game and press the window key next to alt and fn buttons than do what you have to do
or just get skype on another deivce such as phone ipad ipod or what ever
use another in-game application to bring your messengers in-game and leave valve out of this conversion!
