Meaningful State/Province selection in New Zealand please?

When selecting where we are from on our profiles...

At present we get to choose from a huge list of counties.

The problem with this is that country isn't divided into counties most of the time. It's divided _administratively_ into counties, boroughs OR cities (and I only know this because I searched on the names in the list, they're really not divisions that we are familiar with). You either live in a city, OR a borough, OR a county. Counties are rural areas around small towns. Cities aren't in counties. Neither are most towns. Most New Zealanders do not live in a county - most New Zealanders will not be able to find any entry in this list that describes where they live.

The list you want to be using is the Regions -
Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, Southland, Chatham Islands (Chatham Islands isn't a region, but it's a special case). These are the divisions that everybody uses and are familiar with.

Some cities to choose from would be nice too. We don't have many.

Edit: Valve - the people you buy your geographical lists from fixed the New Zealand list years ago. Why haven't you updated it?

Yeah, exactly. I tried to tell one of the Valve people about it a while back, and he was saying "yeah, well, populations change! We can't keep track of this stuff!" And totally didn't get that not a single one of any of our cities is in the list, or any other selection that's appropriate for people who live in those cities.

An American equivalent might be - Seattle is not on the list (nor any other major city), Washington state is not on the list (nor any other state), but Bellevue is on the list.

Does not need to be that specific and include every town, the regions as outlined in the OP would be fine, at least then we could all pick somewhere we live. Yes, having both lists would be ideal.

With the current situation, there are no cities to choose from once you've chosen a county (because there ARE no cities in any of the listed counties). So I figured that getting at least a region to choose from would be a good start.

If we got cities and towns to pick once we have regions that are valid, that would be extra super.


I actually had a conversation with Mike B. about this problem a long time ago. Turns out they PAID some company a bunch of money for these lists. I think they should look at getting a refund.

Mike totally didn't understand the problem though...he was saying "Yeah, the largest cities change, what makes the list won't always be relevant"....um....actually the list we have has never EVER been relevant. It would be like if you lived in say...Seattle. You go to the States list and there isn't Alabama, Arkansas...Washington. The best you can pick is Bellevue...from the States list. And of course there is no city you can choose associated with Bellevue, because Bellevue is not a State. The selection list is totally and UTTERLY screwed up.

So, I live in the third biggest city in New Zealand (previously the second biggest, but as Mike said, these things change sometimes). But in the REGION box, the closest option I can pick to describe where I live is a town of 700 population that's 80km away.

Valve, this is pretty messed up.


Did I mention that the cities, boroughs and counties model stopped being used as administrative divisions in 1989? I mean, getting this list at all was...mindboggling how they came up with it...and then thought they could just discard all of the cities and boroughs that went with the counties...if they'd kept those we'd at least have SOMETHING most people could pick.

The company where Valve get these ♥♥♥♥ty lists from actually fixed the NZ list some years back.

Maybe we were expecting too much asking them to put places where 90% of the population live in the selection, at this point I would be happy if they just put "North Island", "South Island", and "Other" as options

FFS just looked at updating my profile and found how stupidly wrong this list is, missing some of the well-known locations If they are lazy just go North, South, Other. or do the standard list that 99% of online sites use :-(.
