Custom Bandwidth Rate
I have 340 kbps of download rate. Steam gives me option between 256 and 512.
512 is too much, 256 is too small.
Please give us a customizable option!

Ditto. Tbh, Steam needs to give users a bit more leeway with the client. Preset options are tacky. Let us decide font size, download rate, etc.

Font size can be customized by editing a skin. I have a customized PixelVision with even bigger fonts than Steam defaults.

But download rate can't be customized yet.
Editing a skin shouldn't be necessary to do this, though. I mean users should have most customization options from their client within the Settings menu.

Steam has just set the limits to what they limit it on their client. You have the same levels to set up your connection speed as you have to limit it.

My guess it's just for the sake of convenience. The more numbers you put on the list, the more people messes about what to choose.

In any case it wouldn't be bad to have more ways to customize bandwith. And i don't discard seeing it on the future (The feature is fairly new. Better test things with fewer options before adding more stuff)

whist I mildly agree (more choices = more problems) for us people with no so fast connections, this is a major inconvinience, we could use our BW better.
I want to download at max speed, but if I do that, I can't browse. And 256 kpbs doesn't cut it for me, if I have 340 kpbs, I set to download at 330 or 320 and I can browse and download at the max possible speed.

I agree. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to customize the limit. It isn't just a problem with slower connections; anyone anywhere shouldn't be using all their bandwidth for any single download, no matter what their DL speed.

Chances are if you need to change the download speed, then you know enough that you don't need to choose from preset options. My DL speed is 2 MB/s and Steam's only options are 2 MB/s or 1 MB/s. I just want a little wiggle room, I don't want to cut my download speed in half.

Please add the flexibility, Steam. Thanks.

+1 to the above. My bandwidth is 512KB/s (4mbit) and so the 512 limit is no good, but equally the 256 setting just takes the ****

this is still not possible, right? i wish it was

It's not very difficult, is a space that can we choose any speed we want. Jdownloader for example have that option, we need here in Steam client too.

Well probably you think is a joke but not all people live in United States, Japan or China and can get powerfull internet speed.
In my case I can't get more that 6M and is too sad.

are you talking to me?

Yes was for you, because is impossible to find highspeed in some countries like South America, the best example is Bolivia, they have poor speed and if they want higher speed (Still slow) they must to pay a lot of money.

Yes, my case probably will not, anyway I think 6 M is too slowly (and only have 512k of upload "50kbps"), Argentina have one of the lowest internet speed connection in America, is too frusrating.
That's we looking to request a custom speed limitation.

While this thread is pretty old, I have discovered a way to do this. It's not in the menus and it requires you to be at least a little tech savvy to not screw up your config files.

  1. Enable limiting at whatever speed is in the list then close Steam.
  2. Go to where Steam is installed, open the config folder and open config.vdf.
  3. Near the bottom, there should be an option called "DownloadThrottleKbps". This option will be the speed limit represented in kilobits per second. So if you selected 1MB/s, it will be 8000. Change this value to whatever speed you want in kilobits. So if you want 750 kilobytes per second, multiply it by 8 to get 6000.
  4. Save the file and restart Steam and it should be throttled to exactly what you set. Of course if you go back into the settings screen, it will reset.

This is my Steam client showing the 750kBps throttle:
