Break Reminders
Hi all!

It's no secret that sitting for hours on end at your computer is bad for your health. In combination with bad posture or other predisposed health issues one may have it's definitely a cause for concern!

My suggestion is to have completely optional and gentle break reminders built into the Steam overlay, set to off by default of course. They should be user configurable with some healthy standards set as a default.

An example would be a reminder of a 10 minute break every hour, and a short 15-30 second microbreak every 15 minutes.

I am aware that programs like this already exist for Windows, Mac and Linux. However, it's unfortunate that most do not work well while full-screen gaming. Setting an external alarm (ie a mobile phone) is definitely an option, but can be cumbersome, and prone to be forgotten, especially for frequent micro-break reminders.

I have no doubt that many members of the Steam Community would benefit greatly from a feature such as this, while those who don't want or need it would never even know it's there!

Just to round it off, I've included some articles on the effects of prolonged sitting on health, for those interested.

I hope that this suggestion doesn't get buried. I think it would be a great addition to Steam!

Thanks!
-Spent

Honestly If I wanted to I could keep an eye on that without any interface popping up. I have an alarm clock right next to me. But I guess there is a reason for such features showing up in more and more electronics (the PS3 has an option for this I think, a new TV I bought a few months keeps warning me too, even some games try to remind you to take breaks like Metal Gear Solid 4).

Forgive the bluntness but Steam isn't meant to be a nanny for idiots.

Next they'll need to pop up reminders such as "Don't forget to eat, you don't want to starve yourself to death" and "Breathe in..." "Breathe Out..."

I seriously don't want or need a babysitter.
If I need a break reminder I'll either set an alarm or start a timer. As for it "being bad for for your health" who has decided that?
I would close my account if Steam tried to play "Big brother"!

Working on improving your selfcontrol, will be better on the long run than having to rely on others to tell you when to stop.

And that doesn't just apply to gaming, but to life in general.

Totally agree on the self control argument, however, getting stuck right into a game you do tend to lose track of time. As for it becoming a nanny feature, totally disagree. It should be a optional feature that you wouldn't even know is there unless you were looking. Off by default and all that.

See the the papers I linked in the OP. http://www.natap.org/2010/newsUpdates/SittingTimeCauses.pdf being a good overview.

The steam overlay provides and absolute perfect mechanism to implement this feature. I feel it would be a wasted opportunity if break reminders weren't at the very least considered.

I never play the game over three hours, because every time i play for a minutes. It reads: u have disconnected from the server..

Just sticking the word "optional" in front doesn't make it a better idea.

I seriously doubt enough people care anyway and even if they did get reminders, if somebody was so into the game they would simply click away/ignore the reminder and carry on playing anyway.

I also seriously doubt they'll waste time implementing a feature so few people would even bother using.

I walk an average of 25-30 miles a day behind a lawn mower, not worried about cardiovascular disease, obesity, etc...

As the arcticle made very clear it isn't video games or tv that is the problem, it is LAZY people. ANYTHING done in excess can be bad for you. It is about personal RESPONSIBILTY, people seem to forget what that is and ALWAYS try to blames somebody or something for their short comings.

If you get so wrapped up in playing that is on you, not Steam or any other platform. The arctile that you referred to is no different than our mom's saying "If you set to close to the tv it will ruin your eyes." We allknow that isn't true!

thinking the same thing...i dont think that steam is going to have a reminder to stop playing their games...if you dont know when to go to the bathroom, you got bigger problems...

? I don't understand your post!

Most people have no clue as to what they actually walk, after being diagnosed for Emphysema, I started wearing a pedometer. During the winter I don't work as much, plow driver, and as a result I get more playing time. Still find time to work out everyday!
It's your job to take care of your health and wellbeing. Not Valve's. Plus, every game manual usually advises you to take 15 minute breaks every so often alongside warnings of other health issues that may occur by gaming.

YES PLEASE.

I totally dont understand negative comments.
You dont need it, so just dont use it. Dont take it from people who need it.

There are thousands of people, whose get easily lost in game, and forgot to setup ring every time before start. Its just the simplest solution for healthy eyes. Steam overlay, mini app.

I am using the same app on my iMac for work. Its just awesome. One setup, work everyday. But external app break game, switching to windows etc. I need something with overlay, so i can see it ingame, and have time to "pause and save game". I play everything on Steam because i use Steam controller. So steam solution would be the best.
