Accept Bitcoin
Sounds like it would really help Steam and Steam's legitimate consumers. Steam wont run the risk of chargebacks and consumers get more payment options.

I would be especially interested in this option if Steam created a www.steampowered.com/?cc=btc storefront. This would people in Australia, New Zealand and other places that are suffering from legislated price descrimination to purchase games from the international market.

Say to yourself, would you like your weekly wage to be paid in bitcoin, knowing full well you can't pay for anything in the real world with bitcoin. Look at it from steams point of view, why would they take bitcoin when no banks will exchange them, they need to pay their staff and bills and they need real money for that.

There actually are some businesses that pay their employees in bitcoins if they do desired. And it's a universal currency you can just convert it to anything you'd so wish. You don't need banks for it. You just pay them yourself. It's not that difficult to understand.

Not the proper way to ask for a source, kid.
I knew you couldn't actually back that up
The problem with Bitcoin is that it is both a payment method AND a currency. Since Steam has different regional prices, this would upset publishers if they started using it even if it were technically feasible.
Having Bitcoin is like having an ancient Ming vase in your basement. You can't buy anything with it, even though it's so valuable. It's only worth money to a small amount of people.

Just charge from what region they are. How is it that hard? Why would that upset publishers if they're still getting money?
Because it will further emphasize the price disparity between different regions. If every country is paying in Bitcoin but some countries are using more Bitcoin for the same product, it's going to cause even more backlash than they already get about price unfairness.

just because the price differences will be obvious? That's just the publisher's own fault, not steam
Not just, but it's one of the reasons likely it will never be accepted by most mainstream stores, Steam included. The other is, of course, that it is no more real a currency than Farmville money.

except you can actually buy things with it other than a virtual cow. I don't think you really understand it. it's not exactly that new that you can't buy anything with it.

You can't USE BitCoins at 99.9999% of retailers.

A currency is useless if I can almost nothing with it.

what are you talking about? There's the bitcoinstore for a newegg/amazon type online store, there's japanbit for japanese imports, there's the photogadget for camera needs, and other online stores accept bitcoin now. Not only that but there's also brick and mortar stores that accept them now. You're just running off of 2010 logic at this point.

people who believe in an open, worldwide currency would want to get paid in bitcoin. It's not that limited anymore what you can buy with bitcoins.

I love how you love bitcoin and want it to succeed Dr. Worm. Lots of people believe in a open worldwide currency that is free of goverment involment but the same people are also realists who know bitcoin won't pay for the house over their heads or put food on the table, including myself.

no, I don't love it nor care if it succeeds. This thread is for an alternative payment for people who want it on steam. Not a payment replacement. There is nothing wrong with accepting it. I'm just correcting the wrong facts people tend to spout off when bitcoins are mentioned.
