What games do you suggest for an OLD man ?
Good morning everyone. The old man in question is my father, he is 70 years old and has no experience with video games (apart from playing checkers against the AI). What game could you recommend?
Considering that his laptop is a bit old (I don't remember the configuration) I tried to download ABZU which seems to be a purely exploratory game but it ran a bit jerkily.
Other games I let him try:

-Pinball FX3; he likes it but it has too many useless features (like buying tables) that confuse him.

I tried
-World of Goo which seems appreciated but doesn't have the mental elasticity to solve some mechanics.

I thought about
-Binding of Isaac which, in terms of controls, would be perfect but the gameplay is too structured for him I'm afraid.
Does anything come to your mind? no rts like Civ or AOE .too complex...

first of all thank you all for your help, i will replay each one tomorrow , already saved few titles but others like x-com type (which i personally love) and rts like sim city are wayyyy to difficoult for him. My old PotatoSack uses a mini wireless mouse...it s kind depressing from a videogamer point of view lol, but he has a lot of time and I know he has a gamer spirit :) thx again bros

Timeless classics, like Snake, Sokoban, Tetris, and Breakout, might be good to try. He may not have any nostalgia for them, but they're simple and fun. They're easy to play on mobile devices, too.

Dorfromantik is a really chill puzzle game. It's only as complex as you make it, and you can have fun just putting tiles down and making pretty landscapes. If you want to get a high score, you can put more thought into it.

Checked your profile quickly, and I guess he's also Italian?

There's a database of VNs (VNDB), and I just recalled that one of the (for some time) top games on Metacritic was translated into a bunch of languages. Including Italian.

That one is Fata Morgana and it's not as visually cutesy as most of the other stuff I suggested.

yes italian mate, i will check Fata Morgana, but probably he is looking for something more stimulating...

A lot of older players are into "work simulation" games.
Farming Simulator, American Truck Simulator, Car Mechanic Simulator and so on.
Basically those games that have you working a "job". Usually not that complex and can just be a great time waster.
Apart from that sport and fishing/hunting games are usually very popular with older gamers.
City builders too if they dont have a big focus on RTS combat.

Do you know his hobbies or what he is into otherwise? Always a good start when you can combine a real life interest with a game counterpart.

All these simulators are way beyond his understanding :/
I also wanna markr that his laptop doesn't even run Abzu, it could never run these titles.

But you gave me a very good suggestion for a fishing game. He might like it, but it has to be extremely simple, like those PS1 titles

I once showed Merge Mansion on Android to a person of the same age who never played videogames before. Now the person spends every spare minute in that game, stopped reading books and almost stopped solving sudoku on paper, and completely shuns any my attempts to present a new game to them. What have i done…

lol I'm not trying to make my dad a video game addict.

ANYWAY i tried to download Medieval total war 2 for him, since he loves medieval/roman stuff, but it was just ...awkward ?. He doesn't understand those things that seemed obvious to me even when I played as a child (it was the first medieval total war ofc).
I underestimated his inability to play video games, yet he wastes hours with pinball (the one from Microsoft) or checkers.

I'm running out of ideas. I thought I'd let him try

-Vampire survivors (but I'm afraid he won't understand how synergies work)

-Plants vs zombies. Never tried it, but it seems like a telephone game. It must be simple...

-Firewatch: I hope there are no puzzles to solve

-Fishing games?

Thanks again everyone for the replies, love u all

Oh wow. Well does he know how to use a controller, or how to play video games? If not, it may be tough.

I'm an "old man" and so i'm just giving some suggestions in what i like to play. But i know how to play video games.

Work sims as others mentioned as well, but he has to know how to use video game mechanics. Phone games i know are big for those our age as well. They may be much easier to play, but i never dwelled into it.

What he doesn't know isn't the problem. No one is born knowing these things but ith the right game we are not only taught but motivated to learn and get better.

Hence my recommendation for slower paced games that do not require a loty of manual dexterity or speedy reactions. A game like say the truct simulator games for example can do a fair job of teaching controller use without too much friction.

Point & Click Adventures. Since I highly doubt your old man still has the quick reflexes of youth, he’d be better off with something where time is on his side.

Alternatively, turn-based strategy or role-playing games.

Hmmm...well the New X-COm games are pretty nice to get into.
Graphically impressive, yet rewarding tactical planning and thinking. With good difficulty scaling.
Stardew Valley's another one.. Heck I could even recommend something like "FIghts in Tight Spaces".

The Xcom series are great but he'll probably need to spend quite a bit of time tutoring his dad the complexities of the game.

Gear City or the retro-predecessor Detroit would be a pretty nice turn based game as well, and simpler to pick up.

A flight sim like MS flight Simulator or Kerbal might also be fun.

Not sure if the laptop gpu will hack it. So maybe suggestions such as Amaterasu's might be much better.

Also the older Grand Theft Autos might be workable on older laptops. San Andreas and maybe gta4 would be fine for those iGPUs.

important edit: adding an important classic suggestion :

=====

MOO 2 and the latest Masters of Orion released almost ten years ago by some French devs if i remember correctly
