Limiting forum functionality to non game owners
There should be limits to accounts on discussion forums that don't actually own the game. No eligibility to earn points, limit the amount of threads they can make or even limit the amount they can post per day, maybe give us a filter toggle for discussion between owners only and everyone else

There's just too much engagement bait "point farming" on newer releases by people that don't even own the game just to get arguments going and farm stupid steam points

Already exists. Game devs can lock almost all game forums to owners only, they are required to keep 1 subforum open to everything.

That said, personally I see it as a bad thing when developers do that, though. It's not welcome to possible new players and looks way too much as trying to hide things.

Limited accounts already have restrictions on what they can do in game hubs, btw.

The Developer/Publisher can already limit sections of their hub to only those who own the game. All they need to do is leave one section open for anyone.

cite where it states "...they are required to keep 1 subforum open to everything."

I've seen multiple dev's say they are required to keep at least one open (i think its an error message if they try to set all forums to private). Considering that there are over 70,000 games on steam and not a single one has every forum restricted its safe to say its accurate.

Unless you can cite something that says otherwise. Afterall if every forum was locked to owners then people who were interested in the game would have no ability to post

no need to take offense, I merely ask because it is not the first time I see this being said. It would therefor be nice to see where it states there has to be at least 1 public forum.

Global moderators had mentioned it back in the day.

Kind of a bad thing I think. First, you don't have to own a game to have played it. Second, this would almost certainly be limited to account based ownership: You don't have to own it on steam to own it. Maybe you own it on console, or on disc.

Imagine somebody who owns the game coming to the steam forum for a tip, only for the person who has the best advice to be disbarred from helping, or maybe people want to discuss opinions on the story among other steam users.

I own Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the Playstation 2 and Disgaea 1 Complete for the Nintendo Switch which is basically a superset of the changes made to the Steam P.C. version. I'm not buying Disgaea 1 for a third time just to discuss the game on Steam.

Oh, and there is something to be said about people who are considering a steam purchase asking questions of other steam members too.

That's why they require at least 1 forum open to everyone. Nothing wrong with having a discussion forum ONLY for steam users, I wish more games had one TBH
