That OS is the least compatible for gaming, I would highly suggest a dual boot if you wish to play Steam games and use the client without issues, as most of the issues with Steam & Mac are by the changes apple does, which also removed a lot of games from being able to be played due to the forced x64-only change.
They are unlikely to 'test more' when it either works when they release the update, or when apple does updates which tends to cause issues with non-apple software.
Agree with the OS for gaming, its utter rubbish but I need a Mac for work and can't do a dual boot.
I'm also looking for previous versions of Steam online from October or November when it was working beautifully. Doesn't seem like something Steam does officially? I see a couple of unofficial previous Steam versions that I'm downloading. Just a stop gap until the next update.
If you install unofficial stuff you are opening yourself up to viruses and being hijacked and all your items stolen and even ending up being banned on game servers because hijackers are known to do stuff like that.
If you have to have a mac, and you can't dual boot, then you need to buy a second system. If you want to blame anyone for the crappy gaming on the OS, blame apple they are the ones making it crappy for gaming.
There's a reason why steam isn't really caring about macs. its because apple itself, stopped caring about them.
