I really love the new steam client features, layout and ui but am not so keen on bpm. I started a guide in steam universe discussions on how to make steamos run client in windowed mode (steamos-session) and come across a few issues which appear to be client based.
After trying to work out what is in steam for linux client in relation to what is in distro loading it i thought making comparisons in steam for windows client may prove useful. Have just added steam.exe to autostart list so the client loads when windows boots with autologin to both windows and steam client. After adding onscreenkeyboard to steam library (as well as browser etc) have come across the fact steam for windows client has no zoomability :( I have now a fully working configuration for kb + m emulation to allow me to use my xbox controller for both windows and steam client navigation and operation but sadly i need to sit close to my screen instead of being able to use my comfy couch for that full living room experience whilst enjoying all the new features, layout and ui of the lovely steam client running in windowed mode.
I think if Valve added zooomability there are many people who would appreciate it and allow more people to use steam in the living room the way they want to use it and not being forcefed bpm (which does not have zoomability either)
I added internet explorer to steam client and have full zoom capabilities there so i guess another option is to use steam from web browser. zoom is good. we want zoomability NOW!
please it would be nice ;) being able to use windowed mode in steamos with zoomability would be even better but this aint the place to ask for that
Steam BPM is severely lacking in many ways including taking advantage of all the new client features in normal windowed mode. After getting windows and steam working with xbox controller the little appeal i had for BPM has vaporised. i.e. native controller support in steam client additionally i even find using onscreenkeyboard easier to use than the daisywheel method !
Have even managed to get switch windows application (aka alt + tab) working from xbox controller which works from both in normal mode and BPM modes of steam.
Another reason for me preferring normal windowed mode over BPM is taking advantage of using the ability to choose what skins from the wide selection available to put in folder that steam settings shows you can select and use from.
For me the only thing missing from my tweaked steammachine is Zoomability in the steam client.
Plus Zoom is available within Steam Big Picture Mode.
Most of my bpm experiences are from when using steamos and afaik zoom crashes input from controller in steamos-session aswell as zoom only works from browser in bpm aswak. After doublechecking zoom not working in bpm from windows client i edited my post above :ref strikethrough txt
What both op and i as well as others are asking for is native zoom support added to steam client in normal windowed mode .
For many reasons.
TBO it would help if Steam would go back to the theme they used for the Steam Client and Store for example; as that contrast helps it be better viewable IMHO. They could easily do this while leaving the newer layout alone. The reason behind this "blue everywhere" ugly-ness they've brought to Steam is beyond me. I like certain color aspects of it; like the color varient for easily pointing out a EULA/3d Party reference on an app/game store page, as it makes easy to find. But if the color theme would go back the darker background they had previous, I think it would be better viewed that way for a majority of people.
If you have to question eye-sight, then that is more along the lines of the quality of screen you use and screen resolution; u can't really blame an OS/App for that.
Steam,
Why bother having a built in browser if it has reduced functionality?
If zoom and mass font size variety are too challenging, perhaps just an option (or two) under UI settings for "Use Large (or XL) Fonts". Limit it to the default skin if necessary. Or make separate options for the store, forums, chat, etc.
Pay attention Steam, your users want this.
