Operating System - Tired of Windows, I just want a gaming PC.
Can y'all just make an operating system beyond the Steam Deck for PC? I'm tired of how invasive Windows is and would EASILY drop $100 for a Steam Operating system.
Screw ONE DRIVE.
Screw XBOX.
Screw Microsoft.
Screw 343 Industries.

There is only really 2 os for gaming in any significant capacity. Windows and linux, with the steam deck being the latter.

Mac's gaming initiatives failed due to sequential obsolescence and fundamental changes to hardware, and very few use solaris based os's. Making a new os however is going to be a hellhole and have compatibility nightmares, which for pc gaming is a non-starter.

SteamOS is just a Linux-based OS.

What else would they make?

:nkCool:
As mentioned, SteamOS is a linux based system. You're welcome to look for beginner friendly linux operating systems of your own and install them on your PC. Ubuntu is a popular one for beginners. After that your experience won't necessarily be as smooth as windows, but Valve has done a lot to make linux gaming work well.
You cant be tired of Windows - It has over 90000 games.
Sorry to hear you dont enjoy spyware and telemetry
But what can you do?

I don't mind Microsoft. yes I know they been spying. but you know what. I don't care. I have nothing to hide. and its Microsoft. a reputable company. if their spying helps to make better products. that's ok.

This SteamOS situation in the minds of average people is weird.

For the longest time, the FUD against Linux as an OS for regular people has been very effective. People are somehow 100% convinced that you need a CS degree and amazing hacker skills just to install a web browser on Linux.

Along comes Valve. They team up with Codeweavers to create Proton, which makes Linux a viable gaming OS. They create SteamOS, which is a distro of Linux, and they use it to power their Steam Deck handheld, which proves to be a success.

Do people put two and two together and see now that Linux is not only a viable operating system for average people, but not nearly as difficult to use as they thought? NO! That would be too easy and would create cognitive dissonance in their heads, since they're already convinced through years of FUD that Linux is an impossible OS to use for all but the most elite of super-nerds. Instead, they get the idea in their heads that SteamOS is some new thing that will save them from Windows. Even when you tell them to their faces that SteamOS is Linux, and that Linux has been right there in front of their faces forever, the words don't sink in.
A new Steam Home Gaming Console would be a start. And like Steam Deck we can choose to install Win 11.

A lot has progressed since those old steam machines i've tried.

I think it would be a win win for Steam.
failed in the past, computers are upgrading to fast even the console players like sony and nintendo can't keep up with the rate of hardware improvements.

steam needs to focus on not getting in over its head with depreciating hardware

OneDrive, Xbox Game Bar, etc. can be turned off or removed with most Windows Debloater scripts.

What does One Drive have to do with gaming? It's there if you want to use it and you can just ignore it.

Xbox? I suppose you're talking about the Xbox Client and yes it's the worst but again you can chose not to use it.

Microsoft doesn't steal any important information. If they did there where would be so many more companies and people losing stuff.

So the makers of Halo are bad? Avoid their games.

Not sure what the problem is here. You can easily just avoid these things and Windows is still the best OS for gaming in every single way.

Linux communities earned that reputation thought and through with years of caustic behavior towards newbies asking questions.

OP expects Steam to make "windows without windows" (TLDR: All the parts of windows he doesn't like or has been told to hate)
Microsoft are announcing a new operating system next week for those who hate Windows... Microsoft Stable Doors

Better product? Where? I've been waiting for that to happen for the last decade.

Yeah, I can't deny that. Lots of simple questions are met with "RTFM". I can see how that would turn some people off.

Truthfully, I don't think a large portion of the Linux community actually wants Linux to go mainstream among average users. They would lose that feeling of being special or part of some exclusive club.
