Option to hide play hours for your profile
Some people are sensitive when it comes to their playtime hours being shown to steam while not wanting to make their profile private or just cutting their playtime. Can there be an option to where playtime hours of people can be hidden from view by other people or just able to be viewed on by friends only? Playing in offline mode doesnt allow you to go and play with people so that isnt a solution

what are you trying to hide your play hours from your parents or something? or your spouse? or whatever? otherwise... why be embarrassed or bothered by people seeing your play hours?

i get wanting to hide them if.. you are in fact wanting mom or dad not to "see you played longer than you are allowed" to play or something, and fearing being grounded... but beyond that, it seems strange to want or need to hide them.

Make your profile only viewable to friends if it's that concerning

For some people I could see it as an embarrasment that they played some really bad games for really long times. I personally wouldn't use this feature, but I think it would be nice to have for other people.

Any crappy games I show extended times in are games I let idle to drop cards. I'd imagine there are quite a few others who do/have done the same. :P
I like this idea.

I didn't even think of that, that's one thing I've done. If I could hide my game time for games I haven't actually played but just idled on for cards that would be cool.

Not a bad idea, honestly. There are many reason this feature could be useful, to certain folks.
Come to think of it, last I tried it (which was a few years ago), one could manipulate one's displayed play time by simply adjusting the system clock in mid-game. Try that?

okay can you give a list of some of those "many reasons" that the feature could be useful?

And why is it embarrassing to tell your friends "Hey i just let that crappy game idle for cards?".. if your friends even know about Steam a little i'd imagine they'd guess that on their own that you only let that lame game idle for cards or while you slept? This is especially proven if the game has achievements and you have none of them. It becomes more obvious you just let the game idle.

i honestly can only see one reason for the feature. Kids playing longer than mom or dad said and wanted to "hide the fact" that they've been playing video games longer than they are allowed.
For what it's worth, you can already avoid logging you playtime, if you use Steam Offline Mode.

In fact, if you want to "re-log" your offline time, you'll have to resort to timing shenanigans to do it.

Good point. To be fair though, I have gotten a lot of my games from bundles, so even if they are kinda crappy, I do at times try to play them if they have achievements to help increase my total achievement ratio.

Yes, after that post, we are now officially as bad as XBL.

Thank you for your contribution.

@OP - There used to be more privacy options, but apparently it was too much to handle or something. I have people that I don't want digging through my library/play-time as well, so I have to privatize my profile. It's pretty sad, but it is what it is.
I can actually see a point, at the very least in certain games. Some people kick based on playtime (In Payday 2, at least, thanks to the awful community), because they think you're too high level for such a short amount of time (grinding) making you a "hacker," or that you have too many hours and are therefore an elitist (Again, awful communities do this a lot).
