No, that is not the way to go.

Deleting jester/fool award, is probably the best.

I suggest replacing it with 3 new awards:
1 lemon [explanation not needed about it]
2 hand towel [to dry your eyes being sad or from laughing out loud]
3 bag of lollies [to encourage the poster]

Replacing the jester with 1, 2, 3 or even 1000 other awards will not stop them.

It will not stop people complaining about them being insulting, we have already seen people complaining about other ones that they find insulting. In fact the 3 you suggested will just make things worse.

Lemon = sourpuss = insult to people
Hand towel = go dry your eyes from crying so much = insult to people
Bag of lollies = you're being childish = insult to people


See how easy it is for some to think of pretty much anything as an insult. And this is coming from someone who is not insulted by the awards, there was a bunch of people who were giving me jester awards at first when they thought it would insult me, but it didn't. I just didn't care about them. It gave me free points which are gathering digital dust, just sitting there doing nothing.

I'm just annoyed that Valve put the awards in without thinking what some people would do with them or think about them.

I'm annoyed with the spam, not just the people posting trying to get them but also the people whining about.

I'm annoyed by Valve not admitting they made a mistake already and just removing them.

I'm annoyed that Valve brought this junk in just as they got red of the volunteer mods who could have actually done something about them at least in the short term because we know the paid mods are just junk.

In fact thats the only way most of the spam goes away. It won't all fully go away as they were introduced and people will whine that they were removed. We know it won't fully go away because we're still seeing people post junk spam posts to get a badge with a requirement that doesn't even exist anymore. But it will get better over time.


So that means instead of just changing the award system, they need to fully remove it and task a bunch of paid mods to start going through guides, reviews and everything else, looking for the spam posts and not just removing them but also perma community banning EVERYONE who took part

They could make a special report button that puts links to the reported stuff to help better locate the spam.

And if it turns out that people are purposely reporting falsely... not only do they lose the ability report anything ever again, they also get perma banned from the community.


Now I know all that won't happen. The best I could hope for is the full removal of the awards from everywhere but at this point, with how the forums have been going rapidly down hill since they retied the volunteer mods and replaced them with people who don't seem to care about Steam/Valve at all, I don't think anything is going to happen. Heck, I reported something a few days ago, that would have been taken care of within hours, yet the account is still running around.

Secondly you cannot know the "intent" of the person giving the award instead you "assume" it is negative, malicious etc.

(INTENT: Something that is intended) - "No one is a mindreader to know the giver's intent".

In turn this leads to:

(ASSUME: To make a supposition; suppose or believe:) - As in, it fits your narrative to have it be negative malicious etc which goes back to "No one is a mindreader to know the giver's intent".

And finally you have to "prove" the intent of the giver but you cannot unless they actually state the reason why.
