It also happens (with some; if not all) games when you're using a gamepad and not the keyboard / mouse -combination.
Specifying it in the status, due to the latter example could be a little bit misleading.
I might log on sometime and see that "John" is playing and start texting him when in fact he's been away for 2 hours.
It would be nice with something like:
John
In-Game (Away)
Mound & Blade
For instance.
I just mean it might simultaneously get confusing with people who use a gamepad as sometimes it recognizes those people as Away too.
Unless the Away mode was only adjustable manually within the game (but then most people wouldn't probably use it[?])
Otherwise, I do agree.
