If the computer is in a shared house space just don't let the children use it unless a parent is in the room?
~ Not saying more parental options in Steam are a bad idea.. but.. it's not really Steam's job to parent someone's kid. So i'd personally rather Valve focus on developing things that benefit their larger gaming community of older Steam users, vs that of little kids.
i assume you have to be talking about little kids here.
Teenagers could /easily/ figure out how to circumvent any sort of "parent game time lock". Most teens are waaaaay more computer savvy than parents. Such a lock might falsely make a less computer savvy parent think they don't need to actually check up on what their teenager is doing, when they still do. A parent will have to actually still be a parent and check up on an older child/teen who might be more clever than the parent thinks.
i remember easily bypassing blocks on tv and compter when i was a teen anyway. i'm sure teens today are smarter than me when it comes to that sort of thing.
P.S. It would be just as good as the built-in Family View.
Of course, this exposes the huge flaw here: if the kids are going to steal back the mouse or whatever, they're quite capable of finding out what the PIN is.
Steam adding tools to help parents control unauthorized use is a nice idea, but given how basically every other feature on steam gets stuck in basic-functionality-only purgatory, good luck with them adding advanced features like this that work properly.
Take their computers. Unplug the box or monitor and lock it up. Parents are responsible for their own kids. Not that there is anything wrong with a timer or anything. But it is much simpler to do the parenting yourself.
