Canadian Dollar
Hi there,

This seems like a cool idea. Is Steam going to try and beat the credit card conversion rates? I'm just wondering what convenience this will add to Canadian customers.

i think steam just shot there foot with this idea. this makes there steam wallet cards cost more than if i was to go to a store and buy a 100 pre payed CC visa/mastercard. the CC cost 5.95 while a 100$ Steam card is 110$.

i realy wonder if EB games will drop the price now
Satoru 7/out./2014 às 18:15
EBgames will likely convert to selling CAD cards directly. So you'd buy a $50 CAD card, and get $50 CAD in wallet, with no fees

I wouldnt buy any steam wallet cards for now. Just dump money in via a credit card/paypal

I understand the higher prices of games now due to the conversion, but I was significantly more satisfied using Steam with prices in USD. It made it easier to compare the prices with other online retailers. I'd definitely prefer to return to using USD for purchases. I don't see the benefit of having prices listed in CAD without having the option to switch to USD.

Remember what happened to the South East Asians too, for the first week it seemed ok, then the publishers caught up and jacked the regional prices. We're already paying more thanks to this change, and in a month we'll be paying even more. What a joke.

That's not going to happen because most of the games priced right now are the same as the retail pricing in Canada. There is no price to 'adjust' because the pricign parity is already in place. Since the prices on Steam are the same as in retail, there is not goignn to be any 'outcry' from retailers to harmonize pricing. That has ALREADY HAPPENED.

Nice try though. Again WRONG on all counts.

It seems like they simply added 10% to 13.3% to the US prices, which means right now I'm not losing anything; I was already paying 13% extra due to PayPal's exchange rate. I still get screwed by a few cents on the dollar, except now it's Steam doing it instead of PayPal. I don't really care.

The problem is... the exchange rate is going to change eventually. And the Canadian dollar wasn't doing too great recently so it's likely that the value of the Canadian dollar is going to increase... and will Steam reajust their prices then? I'm guessing they won't. I'll still be paying the 10% to 13.3% extra even though the actual value difference is going to be more like 8% or 5%.

I suppose, from now on, I'll be watching the Canadian dollar's value more closely and buy on some other platform when the exchange rate becomes good enough that Steam is just overcharging on games for no reason.

Or if they just jack up the prices hoping we don't notice... I'll also be watching the US prices on games to make sure they don't increase the cost by 20% instead of 10% or 13.3%.

Overall I'm not happy about this. I'm going to have to make extra-sure I don't get screwed and it makes me distrust Steam.

It's far more likely, now that America has stopped printing money, that the CAD will go down to 0.8 levels which most economists even in Canada think is the 'ideal' level given that Canada is an export driven economy. Haveing 1:1 parity is nice for Canadian tourists going to America, but that's not a good thing because that's money going out of Canada, not into it.

Steam seems to prefer to use symbology in the front of the currency for supported regions.

They only tack on USD at the end for regions that do not support their native currencies.

Here's the issue. In game currency is purchased in US funds. Before, I could buy say, $25US worth of ingame War Thunder via my Steam. Now I am forced to buy $25 CA in Steam which is NOT enough to buy $25US items in the game. So I guess I have to buy an extra $5CA each time to make sure I have enough to cover the exchange. Sighs.
Why are some games on par, while others aren't? The conversion is correct with most games, but other games, like Assassin's Creed Unity and NBA2k15 is grossly incorrect. $59.99 US does NOT equal $69.99 Canadian. Why are you allowing some games to be rounded up, while others rounded down? If a greedy company like Activision is rounding down for their new games (CoD: Advance Warfare is $64.99 Canadian), why should Ubisoft be allowed to round up?

If seriously sick of this annoying BS. Nintendo rounds down. Ubisoft rounds up. Sony charges $449.99 Canadian for a PS4, while Microsoft charges $399.99 US AND CANADIAN for an Xbox One. Sony charges $199.99 US AND CANADIAN for a PS Vita. SOME Sony games are the same price US and Canadian, while the big popular ones aren't.

This price format is making zero sense at all. Some games on par. Some lower than par. Some way higher than par.

Not very happy with the conversion to CA$. As I expected would happen, the Canadian pricing is almost always an increase over the US$ pricing of more than just the current exchange rate, albeit slightly in many cases. The sticking point, however is that you can bet your bottom (Canadian) dollar that when the currently at a low point CA$ gets stronger the price will remain as high as it is now. I doubt they are going to be very vigilant about price matching based on currency fluctuations unless they are in their favour.

Pick a game

Any game

And odds are you're doing about 1% lower or 1% higher than the USD price

In game currencies should also be converted as well
