Stop steam automatically setting status to 'online' after disconnect
Sometimes I access my computer remotely from other computers, for example, if I need to transfer a file from one place to another, but I'm not home at that time. Usually when I leave home, I manually set my status to away; this means it will stay set to away even if I access my computer for whatever reason, and will not confuse my friends.

Likewise, sometimes I just want to use my computer without just everyone knowing I'm around (note I don't mean everyone, I'd still like to talk to *some* people, so setting myself to 'offline' is not adequate), and having my status set to 'away' allows me to actively talk with chosen people without being messaged by others.

Recently however I've been finding that every time I lose connection to Steam's chat servers, when I reconnect, Steam automatically resets my status to 'online'. It's not a vital issue, but having to manually change my status six or seven times a day, or coming home to find some friends messaged me expecting me to be there when in fact it was only my remote host triggering the 'online' status, is not ideal.

I know Steam automatically sets to away when I'm *actually* away, but I'm not talking about times I'm *actually* away. I want my steam friends list to *stay* set to away, persisting through disconnections; evidently my connection is sketchy at times and can't stay connected to the chat servers without at least a hiccup here or there.

Would it be possible for Steam to resume the manual 'away' status after a disconnect? Or even a way to set a different default status than 'online', I feel could also solve this problem.

See, I actually posted this thread in the 'tips' section before posting it here, and was *recommended* to delete it and post it here instead, since nobody knew of any way to do it.

So, put plainly, care to elaborate?

I appreciate the time you took to reply with a response, but I mentioned in my original post:

"(note I don't mean everyone, I'd still like to talk to *some* people, so setting myself to 'offline' is not adequate)"

This also doesn't solve when I disconnect from the steam chat servers after signing in and setting myself as 'away'.

did you try from profile page, edit profile, my privacy settings, one those options? i'd like to see your request implemented too if it isnt, since i manually manage that setting as well but by defaulting offline.

That only affects what other people see on your profile, and doesn't affect the chat functions unfortunately.

This is a BUG.

Steam did not exhibit this behaviour up until some time late in 2013. Prior to then, your manually-set status would persist even after Steam has lost and regained connection.

I am astounded they have allowed this bug to persist for more than a year now.

This still happens. I too would like to see it fixed. In the meantime I believe using the "Busy" status makes it stay that way even through a disconnection.

I submitted this as a bug report via the ticket system a few weeks ago, it looks like they have passed it along to the client dev team.

Still a problem, it can't be that hard to fix. C'mon valve!

Bump. This really ticks me off and should be fixed. When I search, I see other people complaining about this too and it must be such a simple thing to get right and makes the devs look really dumb that they haven't addressed it quickly. Maybe they're ♥♥♥♥♥ and they just don't care.

Steam says I am always ''Online'' or ''Away'' when im logged off on my steam account ( Pc and steam mobile both ) But when i change my password ,i seem ''Offline'' when i log off.If i connect steam with my phone after changing my password, This stupid ''Being Away after disconnect'' issue occurs again ... What the hack is this guys ? This problem really pisses me off.I just feel so weird when see myself online when i m offline ...
Benya Apr 2, 2016 @ 11:36am
