See, I actually posted this thread in the 'tips' section before posting it here, and was *recommended* to delete it and post it here instead, since nobody knew of any way to do it.
So, put plainly, care to elaborate?
you can already do this. click on steam in dropdown, click settings. uncheck box always sign into friends when i start steam. it never sets me to online unless i manually set it when i use these settings
I appreciate the time you took to reply with a response, but I mentioned in my original post:
"(note I don't mean everyone, I'd still like to talk to *some* people, so setting myself to 'offline' is not adequate)"
This also doesn't solve when I disconnect from the steam chat servers after signing in and setting myself as 'away'.
That only affects what other people see on your profile, and doesn't affect the chat functions unfortunately.
Steam did not exhibit this behaviour up until some time late in 2013. Prior to then, your manually-set status would persist even after Steam has lost and regained connection.
I am astounded they have allowed this bug to persist for more than a year now.
