I had a dream Steam looked different.
I had a dream that I was using the Steam app on desktop and mobile, but they had completely revamped it.

Instead of there being a single green notification bell icon (which it seems nobody ever clicks btw, judging by how many streams I've seen of people with their Steam window open and they have 99+ notifications), it was different.

Steam looked more like Instagram or Discord, when you opened it up, you had 3 icons that would show you your unreads. They were:
  • Unread Chat Messages
  • Unread Community Notifications
  • Unread Comments (on your or other profiles, etc.)

I thought this was weird, but with the way the internet and people and (their minds themselves) are going, I don't see this being too far off. Our attention spans as human beings are fried, and a lot of people are too... well, I wouldn't say ignorant, but it's harder to get their attention these days without a reason.

I think this idea for Steam would be pretty cool in a way, maybe this is already a beta idea that's being tested out. Either way, what do you guys think? I'd like your feedback, and if this idea is worth any merit or not.

Streamers leave it on 99+ cause it makes them look super popular.

That said, I'm fine with one icon. I prefer not too much clutter. And the Steam client is bloated/cluttered as it is.

Can you explain how and why you feel the Steam client is bloated/cluttered as it is? I'm genuinely curious.

Too much irrelevant stuff on the library pages, too many features that cannot be disabled, too few options to customise and streamline the experience with the launcher, etc.

One notification icon is enough for me, clicking it to further narrow things down is fine, but I don't see the need to add more buttons/icons than there already are. Makes things just cluttered.
