Sure the community came together. They came together to exploit those events to hell and back again. So no, we don't need any more of that nonsense. We just need good games at a good price. That's it.
They were likely entirely preventable issues with more coding, but it seems they'd rather do the minimum and stick to sales numbers.
Egs doesn't have events that I'm aware of. That store is only kept alive by burning piles of money from fortnite and their engine royalties, its future is entirely unknown as it's not profitable.
That, and the deals on Steam tend to be significantly better, GOTY you can often get on Steam for $5.
They buy up games to remove them from steam, and have a system that has been lacking core community features, no reviews, no forums, nothing.
Buy hey, they have stolen crypto scam games, right?
Flash sales made a lot of people wait until the last hour before they would buy the games that they had in their cart and this would crash the store making those people lose out on all of the sales.
Most event games have been quite broken.
The Christmas coal event had some people gather up a large amount of coals and use them at the end. But all this made was them getting copies of Left4Dead because it was the only thing left. Made for a pretty sour event for those people.
There are more reasons but the events where not liked by the majority.
EDIT:
Zefar explained it.
Your inner feelings are called emotions, and they are caused by your body and external stimuli. What you feel is unique and subjective to you. Because only you can feel your own emotions.
But that's still all immaterial. I use Steam. I use Epic. I use GoG. I use WildTangent. I use Glyph. I use Brick and Mortar. Thinking that these are all somehow mutually exclusive is really comedy gold. I will use whatever store is offering the game that I want at that moment for the price I want to pay. To think that any of this is an us vs. them and we have to choose a side when making a purchase is inherently stu .... silly.
Those events were fun, and super neat. I'm glad I got to experience them. But, they take a lot of time and resources to create all those bells and whistles. And at some point the question is, do elaborate events generate more sales? Is the juice worth the squeeze? If the answer is no, then it makes sense to wind that stuff down and focus on what matters.
Yeah, we miss the elaborate events. And users hate to feel like they're losing something.
And to be fair my response is just one facet of the issue.
At any rate people still buy tons of games during major sales, so it seems like Valve is doing just fine without the elaborate events. And it's not like you can point and say "but Epic does it", Valve was the only one doing it and the whole thing may have just run its course.
But who knows, maybe in 2043 Steam will have a 40th anniversary sales even Saliens vs Team Corgi Summer Camp Coal Mining Adventure Extravaganza. And elaborate events will be back on the menu for a while.
