GOG has proved to be a refuge for some of these games. I've picked up quite a bit there just because Steam wouldn't have them.
The login name? Not exactly a big issue, plus it helps people trying to recover accounts. Could it be made changeable but reference the original creation datetime? probably.
Not important, but it will likely have a limited future, like the steam green for accounts made in the first year, or general ones that'll cost steam points. Likely a "in Valve time" sort of thing, but limited customization most likely.
The community (discussions) I use about a decade, as I did not use it the first years. I had no issues with the Steam support, even defending them if others told they had, describing them as fair and always stick to the rules, until one day when I saw they were banning for saying someone who called the devloper a "racist" the one would do "trolling".
Didn't even know till then that saying that someone is "trolling" is an insult and because it is unclear why someone was allowed to call the developer a "racist" while people getting banned for saying it is trollint, it became unpredictable and unclear to me when a rule is broken.
I guess it is just a good advice to not react, if someone starts insulting someone, even if pointing out that it is provocation.
However that is also the point someone else mentioned, the forum is "archaic", there are often discussion in game forums which go far from asking about the game and people like to insult each other, troll or even find reasons to report someone.
This is what I mean, it is unpredictable. Telling someone is trolling is then somehow an offense, but telling that the developer is a racist was not, while in past it was always other way round.
I guess it also depends on who moderates. If you get a forum moderated by the devs themselves, someone calling devs a racist or even talks bad about a game could get banned, while Steam Mods do not necessary ban people insulting the dev, but have their own reasons.
The only constant you have is, that you should not to call anyone anything and not get personal, but just move on. Even defending yourself or others could get you into trouble, if it addresses someone else in a negative way.
