Make clown awards free
Since awards have been introduced there has been a rise of intentional award farming by posting bait threads.

If clowns where free or at least didn't give points back to the person receiving them maybe there would be less people doing that? Just an idea.

any free award would mean every single post on the forum having at least 1 free award next to the comment

the meta would be how many free awards can this post get.

That's why I mentioned the second option as well, not free but at least don't reward points back to the people that received the award, could help a bit.

thats been mentioned a lot before already, they had more than enough time to consider and change it.

my idea is make the jester cost 100,000 points, will sort out the men from the clowns.
People will still farm them just to have the most clown awards.

Once upon a time Steam made the number of VAC bans an account had. It resulted in a race to be the guy with most VAC bans in Steam.

the problem is not the people receiving anonymous insults of "clown".
the problem is the people giving them out.

those same people are the only ones upset that their attempt to insult also includes a "reward".

that said, remove all the "awards" is preferable to any other modification to "awards".

I don't recall reading anyone complain that their supposed efforts to insult someone with a Jester award was somehow diminished because it also gave points to the recipient.
I don't care what award I receive, an award is an award.

You assume the intent is to insult, yet you cannot know the intent of the giver unless you are told why.

When you created a thread about the Jester you would not unprivate your profile so others could see how many you may have given.

Better yet, ignore bait threats.

My solution would be calling the poster a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and move on, but then you are a risk of hurting a moderator feelings and getting permaban from the community.
Valve isn't going to make an "official insult button".

People just need to stop paying people and giving them awards for writing posts that they don't like.

Pretty much this.

Hand out your valuable points to users who actually deserve them, i.e. workshop contributors, reviewers, guide authors, or posters who spark new ideas and launch debates in a meaningful way here in the forums. In all these years I've clowned maybe one or two threads in total because they were absolute sub-zero-IQ nonsense from a seriously deluded dev. I would never clown another user's post just because I disagree with their viewpoint, much less give out an award for an obviously nonsensical bait jester farming attempt.

Other than that, I just don't understand why folks get so upset about a silly clown award. I mean come on, it's a full 200 points you can invest in emoticons, avatar frames, chat effects and other stuff. Besides, snowflakes need some outlet for excess outrage energy and the clown is just perfect for situations when reason fails and arguments run out.

Given that calling someone a name is against community guidelines, it doesn't matter how a moderator feels about it. It's a violation and worthy of being moderated.

And yet they made an unintentional insult button, not considering social media clown emoji insults.

Not always possible. Even normal Linux vs MS topic can attract jesters
Could just make it so if you get banned from a forum, your clown awards get zeroed. That way they can try and troll for free awards, but have to risk losing it all.
