A 'Mixed' review option for reviewing games
I am pretty sure not the first one suggesting this but I believe a third 'Mixed' option for reviewing a game would be good to have.

Many games coming out or especially those from the past are difficult to rate purely on terms of good vs. bad. A lot of games would profit from a third option that offers caviots and a stable middle ground as they are neither particularily good nor bad but rather (i.e.) good ideas packaged in bad gameplay or vice versa. In such cases, a the suggested option would make sense as to allow a more differentiated approach and give those interested a more detailed picture.

Like most of these threads there's a few bits;
-They ask for a binary Yes or No choice
and
-Mixed/Neutral is not recommending it, typically this means there's too many issues to recommend it, which means "No, I do not recommend this".

Mixed/Neutral in my case should be a genuine third option, meaning ''Recommended if'' or ''Not recommended unless''. As I said, mixed impressions, to me at least, are pretty common for games that noticably aged, where there is good gameplay to be found, yet you should know that a few aspects are a little cumbersome or badly optimized, for instance.

The "If" is the reason why it's considered "No, I do not recommend this".
Binary selection works as-is quite well. The review will speak for itself, if it's a good review.

How does one answer a yes or no question with "mixed"? The statement is simple: "Do you recommend this game?" Wanting to answer "mixed" is the same as answering "blue" or "ratchet", they don't fit the question.

That's why you have a box to write out your reasoning behind answering the question the way you have. You can certainly not recommend a game while still highlighting a lot of the good aspects of the game, and vice versa.

Maybe you just don't understand the appeal behind the game, or you find out it was different than you expected, so you don't want to recommend the game but here are a lot of things others might find fun about it.

You can still have a mixed opinion while still answering the question truthfully.
I don’t want this extra option which will steal usefulness from negative reviews, thus lowering ergonomics of the review section overall.
play it, don't play it.... Maybe play it is the same as play it, just with caveats, which you can reveal in your positive review

Fair enough, I think your answer is pretty convincing.
A six tier system would add much more scope for people browsing percentages.. Entirely unnecessary though.

Bleu (Blue): Almost entirely raw.
Rare: Cooked slightly longer than blue, with a red center.
Medium Rare: Half-pink and half-brown on the inside.
Medium: Pink throughout the center.
Medium Well: Slightly pink in the center.
Well Done: Fully cooked and often considered overdone.
Steam should adopt this rating scale: https://www.xkcd.com/2329/

In which case it would quickly wind up like Metacritic
It is a binary question. Do you recommend the game or not.
"Maybe" is not a good review.

Maybe there is no question. Maybe judging the creative works is more complicated than good/bad. Maybe, I could be wrong.

I'm not sure that system would go down well with vegans etc.

Reviews have conclusions. Do you recommend it or not? This is a binary question.
A middle option would not tip the scale to either positive or negative territory, i.e. have no value.

Ok ok, fair enough.
