Add a thank you button for the forum
Implementing a thank you button to reward constructive forum members, who help out other people.

The idea is to add this in the mini profile, so that hovering over a user's name could show something like "has been thanked: 217 times".

Each user can hand out a thank you for another user. You could thank as many people as you want, but it only counts once for one user of course. The whole thank you is only processed internally, and not visible like an award.

Awards already exist

Having a thank you button can perfectly co exist with awards.

Also, the "awards" system is oftentimes misused in a toxic fashion: People are making fun about others, by giving them the jester award. It's not always intended to award someone, in that case it's only about mocking someone in public.

Not everyone has points to distribute them. Also, people might be saving for something.

So basically they just want to give something for nothing ?
They can simply make a post to say thanks

You could write that, but a platonic "thanks" doesn't really mean much, does it? It would also not "last" beyond that post or thread. A thank you button would have a much more powerful effect.

How hard is to write "Thank you"?

Sure they can, but imagine a thread with some helpful info and hundreds of "thanks" posts...

Besides, it'd be abused to artificially bump up those TY numbers with buddies to pretend they're more helpful than they really are.

So no.

Just like +rep?

I forgot to mention that it might be against the rules if you just write something like "Thank you", as it can be considered spam or necro.

People have triggered a "this thread was quite old before it's recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion" for far less than writing "Thank you"....

use your points to grant an award to a user review, showing others how valuable you think that review is. This award will be shown publicly on the review and the writer will receive some Steam Points too.

In a similar fashion, you can also use your points to grant an award to other kinds of user-generated content, including Workshop items, guides, screenshots, and videos.

Awards can also be displayed on your profile like you described. It's already implemented recently. Yea you do need points but I'd argue *some* kind of cost helps a bit on it getting abused. If you see awards as "insulting" then that's your own problem.

+rep has always been abused by scammers yet Valve doesn't give a damn about it.

Some even say "don't leave +rep on my profile or people will think I'm a scammer".

So any abuse of such thanks feature is a non issue...

First of all awards can be given for non forum related stuff, such as screenshots, artworks, workshop content and so on. I'm asking for a pure forum feature.

Second, one single person can send thousands of awards to another person. Therefore the awards showcase is pretty much meaningless, compared to a something like a thank you counter where each person's "vote" carries the same weight, as you can only thank someone once.

"Has received 1.354.000 awards" tells you absolutely nothing about how helpful or well respected someone is in the forums.

"Has been thanked 4254 times" holds a lot more merit.

Typing +rep on someones profile isn't even a Steam feature lol.

Yea you can abuse point awards too like I said but at least it has a cost. Maybe that's why it's just an award points feature and not something to be taken serious of.

People can and some already do have multiple accounts. If there comes a reason (such as Steam minigame store events that died off partly because of this) people will spam more new accounts if they want to.

Thinking about it more you can chain thank yourself over and over by continuing to post. Multiply that by any friends you have willing to do so as well and the inevitable "thank farm groups".

I feel this feature wouldn't hold much value and become pointless to add in and have the servers deal with along side it being partly redundant with the award system. The point shop thing at least makes more sense since it gives an option to use your points if you have nothing else to buy in the shop.
