No need to exist because achievements DO NOTHING thus their "legitness" is completely meaningless.
It's not that things like SAM are some unstoppable menace that devs are powerless to stop. they literally do not care and have no reason to care if you cheat the cheevos or not.
Seriously, it will kill the company dead that does it.
No need to do something this completely insane for Achievements.
It's also extremely illegal and unethical.
This is 100% malware.
Again
1) This system already exists, its called server controlled achievements
2) As long as users control the client
YOU CANNOT ABSOLUTEY POSITIVELY TRUST THE CLIENT TO DO WHAT YOU THINK IT WILL DO
There is literally no way to guarantee this. The only way you can do this is
1) Have server run server software meaning your game has to be an MMO or such
2) Run games in the cloud where clients cannot be compromised
Feel free to choose which of these 2 options you want. Because there are no other options.
Offline > switch to online > all achievements have same time stamp.
Invasive > data protection.
Optional? Odd because i know no one who would agree to been spied on.
Activate a system to spy on you > not a big selling point.
Invasive > data protection.
The real reason for the thread. Achievement level, a meaningless value.
Which is lacking in the suggestion.
Wanted to add to this by saying I have
2,543 Achievements
28 Perfect game
Some of them were either extremely tedious/grinds, required a little luck (randomness of spawns) and actually difficult. Have nerve damage affecting me in many ways nowadays. So for the difficult ones I may not even manage to do them again now. Even OP's suggestion wasn't invasive I have no interest in downloading and playing old games to get 2543 achievements again. Especially when I have a backlog of games I still haven't got round to playing
I know I didn't cheat them and that's all that matters. Confident users that have both less and more than me would feel the same.
Exactly. You have no one but yourself to be accountable for. It is the "i have right to judge others" who feel they need to be the moral compass of others where they have no authority but that escapes them.
Not to mention any system that requires you to completely wipe out everyones achievements, is optional, thus a tiny portion of the tiny portion that even cares about achievements will ever use it....
THEN your asking them to then design features for a tiny percent of a tiny percent, all so you can get rewards for getting rewarded...
Not sure why people can't be happy with the achievement as a reward, and keep expecting to get rewarded for getting rewarded
As stated, those who care about achievements don't cheat so verification isn't needed, or they don't care about achievements at all rendering the suggestion pointless
And so will those of us that don't cheat them. Not invading my system with what would essentially be Invasive Malware. If others want to cheat them that's fine. It's their account. YOU and only YOU know if you cheated them or not. That's all that matters. Personally having cheated achievements would just ruin them completely for me.
I have a few games where I only need 1-2 to 100% them. Considered cheating them but couldn't bring myself to do it. 1 I can remember is do something that can be a bit tricky and the enemies required only spawn frequently before a certain point in the game. After that they only spawn in 1-2 location within a certain time period. Game has no way to advance time so if they don't spawn or you don't manage to do it you're left sitting around till the following day. Thats one task you have to do 20 times (i think) from a list of 30+ things to get the achievement. I've done all the rest. Can't be arsed to play it again and do the 30+ things on the list again. Bored with the game.
There are other games like that and game where I just not good enough or can't be arsed with grind ♥♥♥♥. I refuse to cheat them and I ******************************************************* detest this suggestion
Not many athletes take performance enhancing drugs either but we still have drug tests to ensure their athletic achievements are legit.
Not to mention whenever a suggestion has to start with "it would be optional" then you know its a bad idea and a waste of time. Using up development resources for something only like 5-10% of people even care about, then requiring them to lose YEARS of progress and giving up every achievement ever earned to use it, including achievements that can't be regained or took hundreds of hours to get, then saying for steam to install spyware on your PC, and on and on sounds like a horrible idea.
Pretty poor analogy as this is not a regulated environment with cash prizes, world records, government sponsorship, etc.
If someone cheats in sports innocent people are deprived and hurt. If someone cheats and uses SAM no one else is hurt.
This would be more akin to someone solving crossword puzzles in their newspaper and instituting an online only method where you are tracked by camera while solving a puzzle because a few people cheat....
Are you owed an explanation for others actions when it comes to achievements? No.
