Steam Tag Suggestion: Synonyms

Basically, several tags that are considered synonyms for each other, so if you add one of them, they all get added. It's so you don't have to manually add all three of "ARTS", "Action RTS", and "MOBA", or both "FPS" and "First Person Shooter", to get a game to show up under all the synonymous tags.

I'd make it "suggested tags" based on what you're writing, that pop up and let you quickly click to add others (or all), to make sure it's both optional and customisable. I don't like the term MOBA, for instance, so I wouldn't want it automatically adding itself when I tag that genre.

The basic idea could be neat though, yeah.

Wouldn't it be better if there weren't any tags that were synonyms of each other? If it's tagged "First Person Shooter" then adding "FPS" to it would add no value. Unless there's something that I'm not seeing, which is entirely possible.

In a world where everyone thinks to use the exact same search terms as everyone else, sure. But we don't live in such a world.

Then perhaps, instead of having synonyms auto-added to a game, the synonyms stay behind the scenes. The search would silently swap out the synonym for the live tag, and return games that have that tag. That way the user can use whichever term they prefer, and the games have less duplicate tags on them. On a highly indexed database, which I'm assuming Valve already have set up considering the traffic they get, there would be little noticable overhead from this.
