But I would agree to having that private to bypass the annoying age clarification page when looking at games.
That's due to game-rating boards regulations (ESRB, PEGI)
It would actually be pretty silly.
What's the bad idea? I'm not talking about notifications or anything... just skip the page that forces us to enter our birthday every time you want to watch the store page.
According to Tito, they can't :
Since skipping the page would be breaking the local law, this can't be done, no matter how much you insist.
Edit: Nevermind it does. lol
Benefits for being your birthday is simply not going to happen. It's too prone to abuse.
Actually it doesn't store my birthday date. That's why I have to enter it multiple times. I guess it might be saved as a cookie but from time to time the cookie might expire and the date has to be entered again. Since I use multiple computers, it's also possible that when logging in to a different steam, the cookies gets invalidated in some ways... I can't say exactly why but for me the date is usually not saved and I have to reselect it.
If discount cannot be gifted then it wouldn't be that bad. And to change a birthday date, you'd have to have it manually changed by support using a proof of your birthday like a copy of passport for exemple. It's not really hard to verify. Usually people don't often change their birthday date a lot in their life. Abuse can be detected easily in theory. Using an id to prove your age could also prevent people from creating multiple accounts...
I'm quite aware that it's due to game rating and obviously having the date in the profile would make a lot more sense. If you enter a date below 18 years old, you will get access revoked to some page for around an hour... Tell me what's the logic behind that? Any kid is smart enough to just change the date to something higher to get access to the page in an hour. If the age would be set in the profile, it could be prevented to change the date later without a proof of id.
Which means that kids won't be able to get access to 18+ page shop. Yes when I was a kind we had to provide our own ids in actual shop to buy 16+ games if we didn't look like 16+. If we didn't have 16+ we couldn't buy the games. On that end, the way steam "regulate" age check is pretty bad.
Also, Steam doesn't save the date. I have to enter it usually. I guess that it changes whenever I disconnect/reconnect to steam. It's hard to say exactly but I guess it's just steam saving cookies and they expire after some times or when the cache is cleared for some reasons... steam updates or whatever.
