Profile Backgrounds..

Hi Valve, I notice you have a really cool way of rendering our personal game libraries with our own screenshots as backgrounds. (when I click on a game, it brings up all the info for it and has screenshots I have recently taken of the game as a background image)

It would be a great idea if we could select our own screenshots as profile backgrounds too.

The ones you have to buy on the market are generic, plain and not personal enough for one's own profile. If I could design my own profile background with my own screenshots, just like with my game library, I would much prefer that.

Valve could implement its availability after reaching a certain steam level, so as to generate a little income from it.

I completely agree. The ability to use our own screenshots would be a good personal effect for customizing our library. Also not a fan of it switching all the time, just a checkbox with a "Use this screenshot for your "Insert game title" backround" would be amazing.

The current system protects the community from abuse. If you feel that the current offerings are too boring, then that's a problem that you should bring to the attention of the people developing the game, as I can only assume that they're coming up with these assets, as well.

Unlikely going to happen. People wouldn't buy the Steam Market -backgrounds, if custom ones were allowed for free.

Also to manage it will be a lot of added work. Some better system to moderate custom background would have to be made 1st.

It's a great idea from our stand-point, but it wouldn't fly for a business trying to make money and I doubt Steam would want to shoot their own profits down. Especially for the little difference that it would bring to the table.

I look at some users' profiles and content on them such as their name is ''Sir ♥♥♥♥ you'' or bastard, bollocks ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...This seems to not be moderated, so why not let us have our own screenshots?

The rendering of them on your LIBRARY background already exists...Just click on any game in your library, and watch as your screenshots for that game are rendered as backgrounds. So why can't that be on our profile page?

But you could have to reach a certain steam level before you could have it, (like everything else regarding your profile). That would generate profits even more so than just buying a £0.20 background from the market.

You'd have to reach level I dunno 30 or something...that will make valve more money than buying a default one already available.

You can upload custom images as a screenshot. This would mean two things:

1. Porn. That's what letting people customize anything always leads to. Upload porn as a screenshot and set it as your background.

2. Loss of money for Valve. You can download people's background images from their profiles. You could then upload the image as a screenshot and set it up as your own background. Meaning that you could get basically any of the backgrounds being sold for free.

I think you are misunderstanding my point. If you look in your library, you will see that this already exists, and if you read my above comments, then that might make you think about your post there...

1a) It is already possible to type swear words on your own profile at present.

1b) The screenshots you would be able to set as backgrounds would be uploaded ones, currently millions already on steam right now.

1c) Any screenshot you upload can be reported and is moderated by Steam moderators.

For eram's benefit, you could only set UPLOADED screenshots as background images, therefore, they are viable for reporting just like all screenshots are at present.

Jade, this is also the same thing as having your screenshot showcase, already featured on our profiles (unlocked at level 10)

The background in your game library is only shown to you, not other people. The difference with profile backgrounds is that everyone can see them.

After people reach any level, there is another level to reach. People are always going to spend money, so that point is made null.

By moderators that are already busy?. Uploaded screenshots are already a feature of Steam. How does it make the moderators any more busy? You have already uploaded your screenshot, what difference is it going to make being your profile background when it is already uploaded?

Yes. This will be the case. That is my whole point. Your screenshot will be displayed as a background image on your profile, along with your swear words that are able to be displayed at this time.

No, because you can't set custom images as backgrounds. That is what you want to do.

There are actually. Moderators do their best to remove unwanted images but they can't be everywhere all the time. Note that mods can remove artwork from your profile but they can't change your profile name. Hence the names that have swear words. They also can't remove your background image (as they have no reason to).

All of that can be changed with no detriment to profits or manpower.

Not all people will want to set a screenshot as their profile background. There are a lot of people who will and do want game themed backgrounds that are available on the market.

You can already take a screenshot of someone's profile. You can then already upload it to steam, you can then get reported as is already in place. (and would be very unpopular very quickly for beng a weirdo)

Screenshots that would be set as your profile background will be EXACTLY the same as screenshots you can set as your screenshot showcase - AND are able to be removed by moderators.
