we need some sort of way to make sure devs are using the game ban feature properly

the use of the game ban function explicitly states that its meant to be used for cheating however some devs (in my case phasmaphobia) are handing out game bans over offensive language in voice and text chat and because of steams hands off policy with this feature it allows for very frivolous game bans to go unchecked. it would be nice if we had a tool to report this kind of misuse for review that way perhaps steam could tell its happening with multiple user reports but currently it feels like they can just do what they want and they feel very confident steam will never check.

This is the first time I've even SEEN a ban for phasmophobia, so between that and, well, OP's profile background. I'm inclined to believe OP is leaving a LOT of detail out.

You don't know what a game ban is, do you?
If it doesn't have multiplayer, you cannot get a game ban, because it only applies to multiplayer content.

Game bans for Single player games literally cannot ever happen.

Correct, on Steam you CANNOT prevent a player from launching the game. Only ban them from official multiplayer/communities.

Which is why players with VAC/GAME bans for even CSGO, can still play solo bot lobbies, or play multiplayer in -insecure mode.

Except that game bans don't work the way you think, and won't be done from posts on the forum.
And even if they did, all they do is stop a specific multiplayer component, not the game itself.

Its the dev's game, they decide if you get a ban or not . If they go crazy and abuse it their reviews will reflect that. Steam isn't going to police every disagreement, and all they can do is ban you from their servers, they can't take away your game.

its funny when people assume things and virtue signal like they've never been mean in their life when most have probably said far worse behind closed doors or in games with friends. you can mute,leave,play private,play solo, or at the very least implement a comms ban like most titles. also the reason youve never seen a ban for phasmaphobia is because they almost never act on player reports unless they get extensive or you just happen to run into a trial mod of the discord like i did or a dev like some others. if it was you or me that felt offended and reported it nothing would happen even if we brought it to discord.

The Jan 2024 comment comes from the fact that Steam will be rolling out the new update and we'll be rid of the "I'm quitting/suing Steam for no longer servicing to win7/8" spam.

And no, game bans aren't just for cheating, as we've proven that.

Valve allows developers to implement their own systems that detect and permanently ban any disruptive players, such as those using cheats.

So any "disruptive" player, cheats being one. Stuff like spamming RMT links is another form of disruption, as is chat abuse.

i never said the ban came from a forum, it came from pre game lobby via voice chat of which i personally was not the direct offender just not a defender so im guilty apparently, like its my responsibility to act holier than thou when someone is rude. and in phasmaphobias case they stop your online play period only single player rather than a comms or public lobby ban. i was told to repurchase the game by staff several times which would be ban evasion

i get what your saying but again it not my responsibility to moderate my fellow players its their job, i didnt make the comments nor did i add to them im not going to tell someone how to act in a game they payed for on a mic they payed for thats not my place

Screw toxicity, but I'd argue that these terms of use should be part of the store page. I know people still won't read them like having them outside of steam or even in the forums. But, terms should be part of the contract when exchanging goods.

Sucks when I go to get my breakpads replaced, then find out their clips were removed for easier install, to then find out that they will catch on turns AND THEN find out that their warranty only is covered if you return 6 months later for a check up.......

quirky analogy but yes thats just it, im not subscribing to your game i bought it, there needs to be transparency on both ends and communication which they lack both of sadly.
