Allow proper custom sorting for the game library
I like my games in my library grouped and ordered nicely. But some games just refuse to let me have that satisfaction...

Normally, the alphabetical sorting method should work fine. However there are some games with unconventional or inconsistent naming for each title in a series. These games mess with the sorting, making the list chaotic.

Take an example, the rebooted Tomb Raider series. The first entry is just called Tomb Raider, that's fine. But the second one is not Tomb Raider 2 or Tomb Raider Rise, it's Rise of the Tomb Raider. It does not even start with a T, so alphabetical sorting won't put these 2 games next to each other, not to mention the third game is called Shadow of the Tomb Raider...

For other games that don't come with numbers after their main title, the subtitles after the main title if put in alphabetical order basically never align with the actual release order of the games themselves.

Even for games that do come with numbers, I'm sure everyone has discovered that the order is still wrong, it goes like 2,3,4,5..... and then at the bottom sits the first one, because the title of the first game in any series never ends with a 1. Yeah I know there's a game called Battlefield 1, but it is not the actual first game in the Battlefield series, and if you put it in the "right" order as 1,2,3,4... it would actually be wrong.

Some might say why not just use release order sorting then. Even if we ignore the fact that it will mix games from different franchises together, some games that are ported from other platforms to steam have their newer titles released first and older titles later.

So I suggest some custom sorting method be implemented, either drag and drop reorder or make it so one can assign a custom sorting id to each game and let steam sort the games using the sorting ids instead of the official titles of the game.

Take the Tomb Raider example again. you can assign "TR9" to Tomb Raider (2013), "TR10" to Rise of the Tomb Raider and "TR11" to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. You can even assign "TR1" to the original Tomb Raider from 1996. Then steam will be able to correctly sort them using these ids.

What do you guys think? Surely I can't be the only person bugged by it, right?

Has been asked before. I usually use this screenshot to illustrate why I want to be able to custom name the games in my library: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1909125682

All I want is localised renaming. I'm fine with Steam broadcasting the name chosen by the developer for community pages and such things, but for library ordening just let me put a local custom name.

renaming is definitely an option too, but what I had in mind was like a hidden variable that is used in sorting while leaving the original title of a game intact.

Anyway steam needs some mechanism for custom reordering of games in the library.

Yes, this. Even if you don't have a series, just putting your favorite games at the top allows to more quickly access them, and... I also like to order them just because, good at the top bad at the bottom; I don't want the steam ranking, I prefer my own. I used to have a lot of games for PS2 and from time to time I would sort them in the shelf so you could see from the sofa the best ones.

I would like this abilitty as well for localized naming conventions that allow for sorting based on user preference, with the "given name" kept as a default standard for whatever else outside of the library not subject to user customization or whims.
(copypasting from a previous post of mine on this topic)

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Steam should get a game renaming feature like that used on GOG Galaxy. It allows editing both the sort name and the display name, separately.

Here's my usual example of how it'd work:

* "FINAL FANTASY VIII" - display as "Final Fantasy VIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 08"
* "FINAL FANTASY IX" - display as "Final Fantasy IX", sort as "Final Fantasy 09"
* "FINAL FANTASY® XIII" - display as "Final Fantasy XIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 13 part 1"
* "LIGHTNING RETURNS™: FINAL FANTASY® XIII" - display as "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 13 part 3"
* "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online" - display as "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn", sort as "Final Fantasy 14"

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
