Also adding live translation to a game is something that very few games have even attempted.
Sure, you're right, but there is a centralized "chat box" in the Steam client. Messages that appear here get shown as a pop up at the bottom right. That chat box is a component of parts of Steam, not of a particular game. So, Steam could implement a real time translator (or dolmetscher), you know?
Valve Time is a thing and it could take years for Valve to do anything like that.
Yes, I understand. But I think they have the resources to implement such a small feature in their Api and it would just take maybee two months, if they let it develop by a fresh student in their circle, when not shorter. As a software developer I would imagine the work behind this to be "very" short, because I had to implement such a feature in another project for a customer of my employer. It's not much to implement a feature to a component that allready exists, even if there's an allready ready-to-use service, like the Google Translation Api. Maybee they will create their own translation module.
The fact, that people around the international world could communicate better together, is also a big incentive and motivation for Steam/Valve. I would imagine that when training a new student with the developers, a great starter project would be what they would give out, compared to the huge advantage they would gain from this "small" feature.
Let's see, what the future brings ;)
Best regards

Many users will see something as simple to do and the reality is that those 'simple' things are anything but simple.
Like I said before, if you want it in a game, go talk to the game devs.
Steam cannot add anything to a game not made by Valve for legal reasons.
If it's so easy, why don't you write one yourself?
As a software developer yourself, you will be even faster then a student!
Looking forwart to this small project being finished, in less then two month!
Keep us updated!
It might be good, but I don't know how many people would actually benefit from it..
For my use, there was just 1 player that sometimes played on my server but only wrote in german, so I made a plugin to translate everything that one player wrote from german to english - and made a chat command for players in game to !translate from english into german.
Only took a few hours to make it work, using the google translation API.. problem there is if you wanted to use it commercially it will cost a lot and there may be issues regarding privacy.
There's a ton of them

Hey Vertigo, sorry, but ... apparently this topic seems to bother you :) I'm very sorry for that, if it is not your favourite. But anyways ... If I would get money for that, maybee I would look for it ;) But otherwise, I'm allready employed, but not at Valve. I think, you wouldn't believe me how easy it is to implement such a feature with some knowledge. No offense intended, don't get me wrong.
Just imagine, it's a simple translation feature, not more, Valve wouldn't need to write the service, only implement a ready-to-use one, and it would be great for many people around the world. What do you think about that? Isn't it something that could connect people around the world better, making many players more happier? It would be a small but great feature.
Aaaand ... this is what Valve support answered. I allready contacted them directly, so just read: "We value feedback from the Steam community. I'm forwarding your comments on to the appropriate department."
Aren't they cute?
Anyway ... Be happy my friend and have fun while playing :)
Oh! You're absolutly right, I didn't thought about the commercial use license of the Google Api. Maybee there's another translation api online, that's for free for commercial use ... maybee, I didn't looked at it.
But as I said, you ARE absolutely correct at this point. I forgot about this thought ... Let's see, if Valve can handle it, maybee they have a sevice partner for this allready.
By the way, I like your constructive post with the shared links :)
