profane and inappropriate user names
I suggest there be a ban of profane and/or inappropriate user names and figure out a way to ban them before they are even created.
I have children that like to watch my husband and I play our games somettimes but there are quite a few extremely profane and very inappropriate names that I do not wish them to see. I won't even let my children play any games on steam because of it.
Why isn't this a more family friendly made environment?

The fact that "ClassicCheeseburger" is not hearted out but "ass" is hearted out proves that it's possible to make a slightly more discerning filter at the very least.
Originally I had it with no spaces but decided that might be considered censor bypassing :happy_creep:
Well if I get tempbanned it'll be in the name of science and policy analysis.

And I'll also get some more time to be more productive lol.
Don't forget also that games that don't use the Steam account name could have their own name in that specific game that Valve has no say over - it's just being launched from Steam.
inappropriate user names get banned from the forums, they are given an opportunity to change their name and get unbanned.

No thanks people should not be censored because you let your kids watch you play games.

Actually, they should be banned and lose access to their library permanently. Along with people who put pornography in their profile pics.

The real world analog to this is walking through a mall with no clothes on and screaming obscenities. You'll be lucky if the cops get to you first.

No, I mean analog, which is the root of analogy. An analogy is the application of an analog. Read a book.

Further: YOU ARE POSTING IN A PUBLIC VENUE. YOU HAVE NO REASONABLE EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY HERE.

We're not talking about people who name their account and then never particiapte in any social activity on Steam, because WE DON'T SEE THOSE PEOPLE.

♥♥♥♥ it. I'm out. People got me posting in SUF again. Nope.

People get touchy when you try to censor them, so it's probably no going to happen. Im pretty sure The Lord of the Rings Online names have nothing to do with steam. It seems like the most sensible thing for you to do would be to allow them to watch single player or 2 player co-op games that you and you husband play with each other, not MMOs. You're always going to see inappropriate names and language on MMOs, and the majority of the time it's minors doing it. Also, most MMO's have options to turn off nametags, so you could try that too. Good luck.
1. "analog(ue)" works fine here; it's essentially equivalent to "analogy". Specifically, it refers to a specific piece of an analogy.

2. The closer analogue would actually be painting obscenities very visibly on the exterior one's house, and the neighbors getting offended.

+1, no needs for kids here.
+1 Not our problem I enjoy funny names. Such as Hitlerdidnotwrong
why are you letting children watch games on steam in the first place? this is a platform for 13+ people
please remember to keep a healthy environment for your children. the internet (www) is quite open to anyone. some might mistake their place. some might just be stupid. some are evil, or even dumbasses but you have to understand, that this feature is so widely available and it is inevitable to get around the problem that is mentioned here. It is very likely, that the offensive player is just a kid ;D everyone should be well aware, that everything that is discussed on the network as we use it here, clear or deepweb, is said and can not be undone. please remember your responsibility for the network, as it only works for you
People have no morals, and if you say that oh it wont make a difference or don't try to make a change for the better, then it will only get worse. I agree with blocking profanity in usernames.

Morals aren't something that remain stable. It changes with the times. Progress and tolerance brings new and better morals for all.

Actually I would prefer if people start being more tolerant for all things rather than fighting for censorship over something so petty like words and names.

Censorship? Uh oh. Some here in the Steam community would argue that children shouldn't even be using the Steam service. If a game is rated mature, users should have the right to share all the gore, pornography and offensive content that is related to that product.

Anyone should have the right to call themselves what ever the hell they want to call themselves. If the user names are used in a game, ensure your husband doesn't play that game while the kids are around.

So you're telling me you would want a elementary school/ middle school aged kid cussing, because "oh we should just tolerate it, its going to happen so just let it be and its okay".... you're not very smart my friend. This is why im losing hope for humanity.
