Steam Guard on Google's Authenticator app.
I think the recent update of Steam Guard to work with the phone app is a step in a good direction. Most modern 2-step systems work like that. I already use several different 2-step enabled accounts on Google's default android "Authenticator" app. It is a little inconvenient to have to specifically run the Steam app to get my code instead of having everything into one place, and it seems that it's become a general standard these days. So long story short, my suggestion is to add a way of adding the Steam account into Google's Authenticator app besides Steam's app.

I will not install yet another proprietary 2-factor authentication (2FA) app. When Steam decides to support Google Authenticator, I will turn on 2FA.

YES! I have also had the Steam app mysteriously reset itself and then I have to "recover" Steam Guard by entering my recovery code, and setting it up all over again, including generating a new set of backup codes.

This thread needs to be kept alive. Installing their proprietary app, when all I want is 2FA and I do it just fine as is, is pushy, proprietary, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

They want you to use the app. I have 2FA turned on via email and get ads telling me to turn on 2FA via the app.

I have given up hope. Nobody from Valve reads their forums, they just threw them there for people to post and ignored them ever since. Their customer support is ridicullous at best.

Google 2 Step Verification looks like it could actually work for people with landlines as well as those with smartphones.

If you want Google Autenticator to support Steam you should really be talking to google. The basis of the Steam Authenticator is the same system. Steam just puts a translation layer on top to provide 5 alphanumeric characters instead.

WinAuth updated themselves to support it, Google could easily do the same if they wanted.

Note that Steam's implementation is TOTP with its own character substitution for the numbers

Also note that their app is mostly designed to facilitate the confirmation fo trades. The TOTP part is actually secondary.

Precisely. I don't need/want an app performing any other functions for steam besides 2FA.

Talking to Google? To what, ask them to ask Valve to allow third party authenticators? You're missing the point.

The base number is the same as what google provides there is then a translation to the 5 character code you see in the authenticator. Google can do that translation foe you if it wanted to.

Google's API is open to anyone that wants to use it. It's Valve that hasn't bothered.

Im on this boat, 99+ votes for it. I am not activating steam 2FA. Same as others have mentioned I rather have one app such as Google Auth rather than a collection of auth apps
