Short version, deleting the items is a bad idea if someone gets into your account and deletes stuff you wanted you'll never get them back and all we will see is a bunch of people crying to steam to return their stuff and screaming on the forums when steam support says no.
So an advanced hide is a better idea.
Long version, use the search feature read those threads.
It could be an option for all the items that are not market/trade ready anyway but other than that, it would only create chaos with people complaining about their stuff has been deleted.
Haven't been watching the forums much have you? We see all the time people screaming about wanting their stuff back or a VAC ban taken off because someone "hacked" their steam account and stole all their stuff and/or cheated in one of their games. But they actually gave away their info that was needed to log into their account.
We would see this a lot more if people were able to delete stuff. And it would not be people complaining about having their stuff stolen or deleted, it would be people regretting their decision to deleting something or "accidentally" deleting something even with all the warnings that they won't be getting their items back.
So ya, an advanced hide as has been mentioned in many other threads would be the better option. Something that you would have to go into your account details and unhide them. This way they are out of sight but still there. Best of both worlds.
Second...
If you don't go into your account details, and into the hidden items area, you would never see them... so its like they are gone anyway. So same difference.
You don't seem to understand what I said.... so I will use you as an example.
Lets say I setup a phishing website and tricked you into handing over all your info so that I can log in, and I do log into your account. I then transfer everything I can to some other accounts which then trade off the stuff or sell it off or what ever.
Then just to be a jerk, I delete all the stuff I can, I even delete items that can no longer be gained knowing that Valve will not return them.
Then to be an extra special jerk, I then start up known cheats for your favorite games that I see you have played a lot, then start up a bunch of different games on YOUR account. VAC & a number of other anti-cheats detects the cheats and gives you bans.
Days later you get your account back. Its been wiped clean, you now have a number of VAC bans and Valve will not remove the bans or restore the items.
You then go begging to Steam support who tell you no and send you on your way. You then start screaming on the forums that you want your stuff back and the bans removed. You get told no a number of times but keep making new threads and eventually get a community ban...
Thats pretty much how it already goes right now... and yes there are hijackers who not only steal peoples items but also cheat on their accounts just to do as much damage as they can.
Or lets say no one gets into your account. You think you are done with a game, delete the items, then months later you want to play the game again because you heard its better, but wait you deleted the items you had for the game, you want them back so that you are not starting from scratch, so you ask steam support, they say no. You come onto the forums, and complain. Your threads keep getting locked because its not going to happen, and eventually you get a community ban. Again we have seen versions of this many times over the years. And no its not just children that do the crying.
Or you are not paying attention and delete something accidentally that you didn't want to delete.
Or your brother/sister gets into your account and deletes everything because you left it up and running while you ran to the bathroom.
Or your friend playing a prank on you deletes some stuff while you went to grab a drink.
It all ends the same way, we have heard all these excuses before.
Advanced hide does what you want, no need to delete them. You won't ever see them unless you go into your account details, into the hidden items section and make them visible again. So ya, same as deleting, except less crying.
Or its just left in the hidden section never to be seen again unless you think one day "I want to play that again, maybe its changed." Or 20 years down the road "You know, my kids might actually like that game and I have some items for it."
For all you know in the future Valve changes things because the company wants people to be able to sell the items and the items can be sold for LOTS of money.
It happened to me. I had a bunch of old TF2 stuff which I converted to scrap, then 2 months later the market place showed up and many of the items were selling for quite a bit. I missed out on a bunch of money to buy games because of a change Valve made.
Again advanced hide is the best way to go, keeps them around just in case, and we see less crying on the forums.
