Non-Violent Game Section
First off, i wanna say that i have read multiple post on adding non-violent games and the comments were not positive. Therefore, if you have nothing good to say but only curse word, curse word, curse word & Shout, Shout, Shout, then don't comment here please, Thank you - now to the suggestion.

the title to this post kinda say's it all. I was thinking that it would be pretty cool for those of us who don't like blood and gore to have a genre of : Non - Violent it would make it easier so that i don't have flip through 30 pages of blood and gore just to find that none of the games i saw i wanted to play.

Thank you,

Sorry for necro'ing this thread, but it was one of the few relevant search results on the topic, and I thought it was a mostly interesting discussion. In case anyone here would still appreciate curators with various definitions of "non-violent" or "family-friendly" games, there are several now:

- For calm/relaxing games that are story-based and/or have adventure elements and are generally free from fighting, deadly threats, jump scares, time pressure and such (with a few exceptions that are mentioned in the review text): Peaceful Adventures and Stories - full disclosure: that's my own curator, with some contributions signed by the creator of...

- This curator that has a broader range of games (heavy on simulations, survival, strategy, puzzles) and a broader definition of "non-violent", mainly concerned with the player/character not having to participate in violence: Non-violent Entertainment

- This one has a lot of games that would be considered non-violent to varying degrees, but they do include games with combat as long as it's cute big-eyed characters fighting "monsters" and there's no blood (they also include a lot of games that aren't out yet, and often just copy&paste Steam's/devs' game descriptions): Wholesome Games

- This is a rather small collection of non- or low-combat games, been a while since it was updated: Pop-Culture Detective Agency

- Just to show the difference, this is a curator for games that are considered "family-friendly", with lists for recommended age groups. There's a LOT of combat there, just no blood or gore and again, cutified: Kids That Game

I only have a couple of games in my collection that are tagged "family friendly", probably because I like games with less child-oriented graphics, with text, with advanced plots or plots that aren't about kids or animals, difficult topics in some cases, and - warning for those who take issue with that - I don't care about "bad language", nor can I be bothered to use my precious 200 characters review space on warnings about it. Honestly, I wouldn't even remember if a game I played had someone say "sh*t" at some point. And I'd rather that kids learn how to say words than how to shoot stuff, but that's just me.

I'm not sure "non-violent" would be a genre, but maybe if this is the sort of thing you're interested in, why not become a curator specialising in such games? I imagine it would be rather popular among parents looking for games for their kids, as well as people who are just looking for something a bit different from the usual kill-'em-all fare.

This is one of the few completely constructive post I've read the whole year. Thanks to it I even start to see some sense in the whole idea of curators.

Well done, Doug.

Plenty of non Violent games on steam actually. I mean the Pop cap collection is pretty tame. With the exception of 4 titles.

But be careful what you consider non violent. I mean technically teh FNAF games are all non-violent

ANy num,ber of hidden object or adventure games point and click style.. The difficulty with non-violent games of course is keeping th game engaging and interesting. But then again. CCG's are also inherently non-violent when I think of it.

This is a great idea, actually. Like TheStoryteller1 says, this is actually an example of a good use of the curator feature.

If you wanna start a group to make a curator list for family-friendly videogames, that sounds like a great idea. At the very least it'd be better than using the curator feature to yell at games that are 30fps-locked or obsess over fanservice.

And I think "family-friendly" might be a better term than "non-violent".

That said, typically you can pick out such games by their ESRB or PEGI rating or whatever. I don't know if there's a way to use that as a search criterion when doing a search though.

Its okay to have non-violent games. The only problem with them is imature people or children under the age of 16 playing them. Im just gonna put this out there, I HATE IT when I see a 5 year old cusing his or her mouth of while playing GTA. A nonviolent game genre would be more like a more friendly place to go, and I think its a GREAT idea.

Thing is. I think you could just check the PEGI rating as well.

And what kind of parent lets a 5 year old play a game like GTA. That's some shoddy parenting right there.

Well, ideally a curated list of non-violent and/or family-friendly games would feature not merely non-violent/family-friendly games, but non-violent/family-friendly games that were good. The ESRB and PEGI systems just indicate the presence of certain types of content. They do not speak to the issue of whether or not the games are actually worth playing.

(As an aside, one game I might nominate for such a list would be Submerged, which I picked up yesterday off the big sale here. For a game with zero combat or violence, zero objectionable language, zero sexual content, and apparently no way to even die, it still possesses a certain charm.)

Wouldn't this just do nothing? the 6 year olds would just play cod or something anyway.

Probably be used by parents, or mature gamers who have specific tastes, such as OP, or even myself.

Kinda reminds me of that one picture someone made showing that Call of Duty seems to appeal to adults but is played by kids, while Splatoon seems to appeal to kids but is played by adults.

The same parents who let their 5 year olds play Manhunt?

that sounds awfully familiar...

This is a very difficult to define tag.

Look: Even chess or go are very violent games. They are the essence of war games.

As a matter of fact, each and all of competitive games are per dfinition violent games. It doesn't need tons of blood and splatter to be one.

Even minecraft is violent. Or Anno "whatever"

I thought long and hard about this, because the very dumb politicans of my country, germany, wanted to ban all violent games after incidents. Again, and again and again, instead seaching for the REAL problems what's wrong within society.

I came to two conclusions in this matter:

1. There are no non violent games.
2. I don't want to play a none violent game.

We are grow up with violent games. Even children games are violent, playing robber and police. We are a violent species, we are predators.

There are a few games, that help our intellect Like Sim City, or other Sim gams. Building things is the other side of our nature. But even in this games you can find violence. Even in the settler games or Casaer games. You got crime in simcity, and invasions in Caesar games.

Yes, it is.

But it's reality. I've heard that basicly near 50% of the regulary CoD players are underaged.

In our country it is ONLY a decision of the parents, what they will allow their children to see or play. And that is a good thing, if you are a responsible person. The rules of the government end at the door of your property, concerning the education of your children. They have absolutly no say in that matter, what happens inside your home.

That does not means I would have allowed my children to play gta, until I found them mature enough, to see that this is only a most boring game, with rules, that don't apply in reality.
