GIF Profile Pictures.
I'd very much like to see these be added, like how you can have them on Discord etc.

The point shop ones are the only ones available. Valve does not want to be legally liable for seizures etc.

Why would it make them legally liable for seizures? There's plenty of things on Steam that could do this already, simply using a PC puts those people at risk of such things.

they dont want to moderate user profile gifs. takes time and money for zero return. they wont make money from you uploading a gif avatar so you can purchase pre approved ones from the points store.

Browse here with adult content enabled to see why it will never be a thing:

https://steamcommunity.com/?subsection=images

Hint: plenty of gif animations of men and women doing the thing.

This is what ton of avatars would turn out being about if avatar gif images would be allowed and as eram above said, last thing Valve wants to do is moderate the uploaded images. Current policy of acting only on reports would not cut it anymore.

Doesn't Steam already support Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)? Animated versions never getting support as user generated content for profile picture.

They already do moderate profile pictures. Unless you’re referring to the instances where someone hides something bad in a single frame and then moderation would attempt to comb through that.

Yes they look at avatar reports but it would add a lot more time and effort

Hmm I got an idea:

If you want a custom animated GIF avatar, you will pay $5 upfront, then can upload and preview the avatar and it will stay pending (and not visible) until approved manually by a moderator. You have to pay for every submission to approval (preview is free).

If the moderator redlights the avatar, the $5 are lost, no appeals. If the moderator greenlights the avatar, it becomes visible.

How about you pay $100 upfront and release a game that people will pay you to play?

No, 5$ is not such a big amount to stop anyone from doing bad things.

Make it 500$ and it might work.

Point shop items require verification of the game (limited profile features/steam is learning about this game).

As long as you release an actual game and not a throwaway thing just to get an animated avatar, that shouldn't be an issue.
