I feel like that might just kill off the value of any "sought after" card sets on the market though.

The trading card system is a good alternate system because it gives second life to items of delisted games.

people still prefer tradable items, so i very much doubt that. i personally prefer point shop stuff, but it's a little unfair that i can't obtain items for games that i've paid for.

Valve has no right to sell those items once their game distribution contract ends. They'd need the permission of the developer/publisher to do so. I doubt Valve is interested on spending effort on such things.

except developers receive no money for point shop items, so i'm not sure how it would be considered "selling". we can still craft booster packs for removed games -- how would this be any different?

As far as I know if developers/publishers pull the games, the points shop items remain for sale. I checked my points shop and I can get the items from for example Grid 2 and Dirt Rally even though both cannot be purchased anymore.

When a game gets banned, ergo removed by Valve, everything gets nuked. That's on purpose, since the agreement between Valve and the game dev/publisher gets terminated. Points shop items are created, and owned, by the game devs/publishers. Valve cannot keep offering them in the points shop because of that after termination of the agreements.

Even if it's not sold, it's still being distributed. Likely has to do with the usage clauses in the contract steam has set up with the devs and once that contract expires or terminated the distribution rights to those copyrighted materials (ie the points shop items) goes with it.

but you can only purchase backgrounds and emoticons if you own the game + 2 hours playtime. the game itself is not being distributed. again, i will point to the fact that you can still craft booster packs for removed games. there is zero difference, except booster packs can then be distributed to other people, whereas point shop items cannot.

depends on how it was removed yes. but i can tell you for certain it is not just banned games. there is also an issue with point shops for many non-removed games. for many, items in the point shop do not appear at all, and you have to use steamdb to purchase them. funny thing is, once you've done that, the item will then appear in the point shop.
