Idea: The Historical Origin of the Steam Logo!
I think I have an idea of what it is from, and I would appreciate a comment from Valve on this.

My theory is that the logo's engine-like appearance stems not just from the common sight of the pistons of steam locomotives of the Old West (though that is certainly a possible inspiration), but also from the earlier turn-of-the-century Steam TRACTORS (such as the 1905 Best steam tractor pictured here[en.wikipedia.org].

I would appreciate a comment from someone at Valve on this, as I'm rather interested in history in addition to being a gamer, and I'd also like to know what other Steam users think.

It's a connecting rod and crankshaft. In steam driven vehicles it distributes the power to the wheels.

So the significance of the logo is that the rod and crankshaft of Steam is distributing games to the masses. Looks like my theory was off. Back to the drawing board. But I at least hope I brought a little something different to the discussions :)

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
